AC130: Wanting a good, flat picture setting...

I'm looking for a nice flat picture setting to use for color correction. Any suggestions? I'm thinking something along the lines of the CineStyle setting from Technicolor (for Canon DSLRs), but I really don't know what I'm doing as far as that goes.

Got a summer-long thing with a record label starting next week, and I'm wanting to use this cam for our documentary-style shoots. So... help would be really nice. Thanks.

I assume you are talking about scene files??? Supposedly the F1 file where everything is set is zero (factory default) gives you a typical video look as opposed to a cinematic look but the chroma saturation seems low to me. For standard documentary settings probably keep scene file 1 and push the Chroma Level to +2 and you would have a typical video look without any frills. I found that in post using default settings I didn't need any colour correction with my cameras shooting 1080 50i but needed to push the overall saturation a fair bit in Sony Vegas. Skin tones even with good exposure tended to be very washed out and lifeless.

Grab a copy of Barry Green's ac-130 book ...he tells you everything about scene files, otherwise start with F1 and modify it to your own taste....I personally found that the F3 setting was a must better jump off point!!! I just dropped the high Chroma Level they use down to 3 and keep Chroma Phase at zero unless I'm doing early morning or evening mood shots....it's more a matter of personal taste!!

This is one I designed after reading Barry's book, very flat:

Flat Look:
Detail level: -5
Vertical detail level: -5
Detail coring: +4
Chroma level: -4
Chroma phase: +3 (change to your tastes)
Master ped: +2
DRS: 1 (or off)
Gamma: Cine-Like-D
Matrix: Cine-Like

@Chris: I've got Barry's book. I'm not wanting things to look good right off the camera, for I'd much rather adjust things in post. However, thanks for the tip on F3!

@Firefox39: Aha. This may be it. I'll take a gander at it. I know this seems silly, but which scene file did you sacrifice to use this? Also, are you typically a 24fps guy or a 30fps guy. I'm in a stage where I don't know which to use for which, lately.

I think I may use this for a dance show to preserve the shadows more. Not sure yet. I will also use to to match other cameras in post. I go back and fourth between 24fps and 30fps. Now I do wedding in 24fps but most everything else at 30fps.
