C300: want prores SDI recordeer for C300M2

Nothing as yet. Waiting see if there's demand for prores for upcoming jobs.

Do you have experience with a measureable quality difference in externally recorded prores out of the c300mkii vs internal XF-AVC?

I don't have that experience as I have not used my Ninja Blade with the C300 MKII, the client we shoot for when we have rented it is familiar with the CFast cards and the XF-AVC workflow. If I end up buying the C300 MKII, I am now thinking I will just buy probably six 128GB CFast cards and use a Zacuto Graticle over buying the CD Odyssey or Shogun Inferno so I am not too concerned anymore with external Prores recording. When I look at the size, weight, cost and clutter, I think the same money would be better spent on a Graticle and just trying to keep the camera as light and streamlined as possible. If you use the Graticle, you can mount the on-board monitor on the rear hotshoe for a producer or sound mixer to see what you are shooting. Also, right now is the absolute worst time to buy a new camera, just weeks out from NAB.

The internal codec is very high quality. The 12bit 444 XF-AVC codec is imho somewhere between ProRes 444 and ProRes 444 XQ in terms of quality. 4K XF-AVC 422 is very close to ProRes 422HQ, imho. I recently used my C300mk2 as a stills camera that can shoot 30fps, and for those purposes the internal XF-AVC codec came up short. But so would ProRes. Next time I'm going to shoot RAW for those purposes!

As for CFast cards I find the 128GB gets annoyingly small with 4K footage.

Turning on 4K Baseband video on the SDI output would require both Rec Out and Mon out to perform a Dual Link output as the plugs are 3G SDI and not 6G SDI. So not sure what that would be compatible with? Not a Pix-E as that is single link 6G (if I remember correctly).

Do you do dual recording to cards or to only one card at a time?

I just got a shogun flame and I got the exact same experience. The image or the prores recording via rec out is much noisier (like real bad) and also more contrasty then the internal 4K
I think it is because there is no noise reduction via the sdi raw.

And my firmware is the latest, so that hasn't been fixed.

Is the odyssey any different?
