Good stuff.

i'm much more interested in a story about people who already have something invested in each other when we meet them. as an audience member, i instantly have questions about their dynamic. that makes me want to learn about them.

I absolutely agree with this, and with the decision (assuming anything's been decided) to stay away from siblings. This should be an interesting film. Just curious, what's Marion and John's relationship to each other in real life? They seem to operate on very similar wavelengths.

Also curious: you mentioned your opinion of When Harry Met Sally. I'm wondering what your opinion is of High Fidelity?

well, we met for over 5 hours. talked extensively about many, many things. Kevin K. Shah joined us with a ton of questions for us to consider in developing these characters. He is a storytelling madman. and i believe the consensus was to step back a bit. to stop talking about plot. and to just focus on who these characters are, right now. and why they need or want to go on this trip with the other person.

next step will involve some improvised rehearsals to explore these characters. and those will definitely be recorded and posted here.

I am seriously considering shooting this with the Nikon D90 in D-Movie mode, if it meets expectations and is released in September as promised. Alot of night photography was planned and the low-light sensitivity of this cam looks very, very promising.

I was pretty interested in that feature as well, Zak. But:

- you can only record 5 minutes per clip at 720p
- presumably no provision for audio, so you'd have to do film-style duel-system recording
- automatic exposure only

That last one in particular really interferes with a lot of creative possibilities.

Still, it's probably worth investigating, and I know there will be certain applications where this will be an ideal tool.

This is Zak we're talking about. Has he ever had a shot longer than 5 seconds, let alone 5 minutes? :)

Seriously though, I don't see that as a limitation at all. Nor the sound...You'll get better audio recording on a separate system no matter which camera you use. And I believe you can lock the exposure...? Not positive though.

I'm VERY interested in this for under the gun shot stealing and who knows what else. And I'd love to see what you could do with it, Zak. Seems like a perfect fit for your style.

you can lock in the exposure. sound will be recorded with a sennheiser 416 to a sound devices cf recorder. i will gladly trade 5 minute takes for the low light sensitivity and 35mm depth of field.

also in terms of image quality, i pulled a native AVI file from the D90 into final cut and the quality is on par with HDV. and looks a touch better than the HV20, imo.

the release of this film will be highly experimental. i plan to seek out an advertising sponsor (Nikon maybe?) to monetize a free, web-wide release. then follow with a dvd release. i've pretty much determined that festivals (while fun) are a waste of time and money.
