The hands-free Segway came along towards the end of my Steadicam days and I never got into it, but I know a few who really embraced it and there are some amazing examples of things done with it (the famed clip from the Eurovision show with the operator leaping off it mid-shot for one). And there are a few clips of accidents with them also, the Usain Bolt mishap comes to mind.

Wow I just watched the Eurovision shot. Wow. That op wins everything. What an incredible combination of athleticism and artistry. But I enjoyed the oner in true detective more...come on, man
Don't get me wrong, the TD oner was great, especially if you've ever strapped one on and know how hard it really is, but... I'd compare the TD shot to throwing a perfect game in baseball and the Eurovision shot was(Lord, I can't believe I'm citing this...) Tom Brady leading the Patriots to the SB win from that 25 point hole. Both great feats, but which one was more exciting and you said to yourself, "WTF am I witnessing?!".
I suppose to continue your metaphor I would say - what if you're a baseball fan but not a football fan? I don't even recognize that singer or follow Eurovision. But I loved TD Season 1 and was very invested in the story when I saw it. Just remembering that oner raises the hair on the back of my neck and makes me feel coked up and one false move away from death
Funny thing, that True Detective shot. Not to detract from the shot itself but the attention it got...it kind of felt like old wine in a new bottle. Late 90's, early 2000's, big Steadicam oner's were all over TV, until they weren't any more. Then that shot came along and it was like no-one had seen anything like it before. It may just be my personal taste but I think I'm just drawn to oner's that have more nuance than brawn.
I've never seen one second of that Eurovision singing show except that shot.
On a wider note, as someone who has owned several gimbals, large and small (I currently have 3) I really miss having a skilled Steadicam operator pulling off the shots.
