Voting preview

It's great to see how enthused everyone is and we'll be going live with Sci-Fest very soon. Voting will be somewhat different this time around so I thougt I'd give you a little background before the voting starts. All DVXusers with 100 posts at the time they vote are eligible to rate the films. Please, no flurries of garbage posts just to get your totals up--you can aways vote in the next and future fests. Each film will be rated on a scale from 1-10 in seven different categories. The categories are: Special Effects - This is a special category that doesn't contribute to the final score so as not to handicap films without SFX. Keep in mind that some of the best SFX are subtle and may be hard to recognize as SFX. If you want to reward a film with outstanding SFX, you can also up the Cinematography score a bit. Cinematography - How well does the filmmaker use the language of film? Camera movement, mise en scène. You can include editing in this category as well. Lighting - Pretty self-explanatory. Sound Design - How well is the soundtrack mixed? Did the filmmaker include foley, sound effects, and capture clear dialogue? How well does the audio track contribute to creating atmosphere? Score - The quality of the musical score. Is it appropriate for the film? Screenplay - Is there a strong story with a beginning, middle and end? Is the story coherent and appropriately written for a six minute film? Is the dialogue natural? Acting - Are the performances compelling and believable? Overall Rating - This is the average of all the other categories excluding SFX.You don't have to rate every film, but for the films you do rate, you must fill in every category with the exception of SFX if it doesn't apply. Please be fair and honest. Voting irregularities may get a film disqualified and this includes intentionally downrating other films. Filmmakers are free to give their own films 10's across the board. Good luck to all the filmmakers and thanks to everyone who participates in the viewing.

wow...i like that...and immediately thought about all the things i should´ve done better

let´s go sci-fi

Thanks for the update Barry! I really like this system and think it's a really good way to truly rate these films! Looking forward to the fest! (Can't wait actually!) Thanks again for the work!

It would perhaps be helpful to add a sticky at the very top of this forum with just the latest news. There are 50+ entrants, and hundreds of interested bystanders trying to figure out when/where this thing is going to start. As it's been several weeks, and several deep and ongoing threads later, a single central spot for 'Sci-Fest News and Information' would be extremely useful for those who are lurking and just want to see what the status is, and not necessarily wade through all the anticipatory posts.

I think when this thing goes online there will be plenty of noticability of it. And, I'm sure Barry S will restate the voting procedure or link to this thread from the "main" Sci-Fest thread. I am sure we'll all know when this thing is live!

Wow. That's a very complete voting system. I like it a lot. It will really help us drill down on what we can improve instead of just one overall score!

Agreed! Totally like it more than the zombiefest system.

No doubt there will be a very visible notice when things actually start. My suggestion for a top-level 'News' sticky thread was to cover the time between now and then. As things drag on, there is more and more stuff to wade through just to figure out what is going on. A top-level 'News and Info' sticky would make it very clear to everyone (who doesn't comb through every last post in the various threads) what is currently going on.

Indeed a good system. I guess it will make people more responsible for what they are voting. Congrats for these new changes.

Yeah, I'm still calling in sick and tired to work. So feel free to open the theater doors anytime now. :D

oh yeah..*cough sniff achoo!

Wait a second.

"Overall Rating - This is the average of all the other categories excluding SFX"

Is the overall rating calculated automatically or do we have to give it a vote of what we think the shortfilm deserves?

I say this because a film can have very bad sound, very bad image, and still be a great shortfilm.
On the contrary, there are a lot of movies, perfectly made, with great visuals, impressive sound, perfect lighting, editing. acting ... and they just dont work, they are completely boring (ie: SW: episode1). So if this average is done automatically, this kind of films will win and maybe they are not very good. :]

Well, there are categories for screenplay, and acting, which you would rate high if you liked those aspects. And if a movie is made perfectly, with good everything, then why wouldn't it work? It must have had a horrid screenplay... Anyway, just my 2 cents.

Sometimes the movie is greater than the sum of the parts, sometimes it's worse than said sum. But it's got to be hard to put together a rating system that is going to take into a account all facets of a subjective scoring system. I think what's been put together is pretty darn fair. Like anything else, the overall effect of the movie is going to color how the individual parts are perceived.
