Congrats, Blaine.... You've been posting like a maniac, December, Damn!!

Yeah... I think I had like 200 posts in November, and started really getting involved. But Blaine, you take the cake dude!

Cinematography should include:

- framing
- lighting
- camera movements
- color correction

Summarizing: the visual aspect

The problem comes when we have 2 prizes, one for best camera and one for best lighting.

I don't see the problem...can't you give a "cinematography" score based on all four of the criteria you mentioned (framing, lighting, camera movement, and color correction) and then give a separate score strictly on the use of lighting? Just because there is a prize/scoring category for lighting doesn't mean you have to remove it from the cinematography category...IMHO

Exactly.

I just don't get why people are complaining at all.

You certainly can do it this way. It's just odd: since there are multiple categories covering the same aspect, the quality of the individual visual images, a higher percentage of the overall score will be based on that aspect, and the results will be weighed toward the quality of the shots, overshadowing other categories. In short, if you have good looking shots, you get counted up twice, and if you have poor ones, you get counted down twice.

Listen to Da Man, peeps. MacGregor knows these elements better than most of us.

Can't wait to see your entry, Mac!

The suspense is killing us man....I'm beginning to really appreciate that old military expression more and more...

"Hurry up and wait."

Ok...back to torturing Algebra students,

Laterzz,
ProfD.

hehehe.... yeah... the suspense is killing me too... I am sure that Jarred is working his behind off trying to get them up...

Ready to go

I think this system will be a very fair way of voting. I also think I am going to need to order a huge bucket of popcorn to watch all of these shorts. I wish I could vote but I just don't have enough post. Maybe next time, I can't wait to at least see the films. When do we get to do that anyway?

I'm going to jump in with my two cents on the category thing. First, I'll say this; I'm a professional Director of Photography. Not patting myself on the back, just saying that being a D.P. is my only job (well, I occasionally Camera Operate on things I don't shoot, but, that's beside the point). I'm totally cool with the Cinematography and the Lighting categories separated. That means that I get two awards. However, I never edit. Ever. I hate it. It makes me chain smoke and bite fingernails.

I feel bad that my editor, who is a really brilliant guy, and also the Director of the film, does not get to be directly recognized for his achievments. Obviously, if people really like our film, and we get a high Cinematography score, he and I will share the credit, but... it still feels a little odd.

That being said, I don't want to be one of those guys getting all hung up on the categories, as the most important part about this is seeing the films, and enjoying each others work.

Food for thought.
