Volcano Test video

So lately I've been trying to build miniatures and models. Me and my friend have spent the past few days carving styrofoam and making rock face looking walls out of tin foil. We've been going from rock type to rock type...trying different stuff... then today for some reason I decided to try and make lava. So heres the results from that.

As you can see...the rock formation is pretty crappy...it was about to rain and i was i a rush to get it set up. Its just a pile of dirt clods spray painted black. The whole thing was not very stable and almost fell over a couple times. If Ted sees this I'm sure he'll be happy I went with the trusty ladder.

The lava is made out of lemon pie filling with some decorative red sugar mixed in to make it more orange-looking. Then i crumbled charcoal on the top and added some more black spray paint. The light is just a halogen worklight....which was waaaay to hot for where I put it. Eventually it melted through my plastic tray and started making the pie filling bubble....but it looked cool...so i just let it burn.

Overall i think it worked out pretty decently for the amount of time i spent on it...which wasnt very much. I'm looking forward to trying it again and improving the rock formation and the lighting.

but anyway...it was pretty fun to make.

Man that looks fantastic! Best homemade lava kit I've seen... reminds me of my mate Brian and his lava scar.

Hey now, that looks pretty damn convincing! To be honest, I've always wanted to give miniatures a shot and you've totally inspired me to finally try it out.

Awesome!

Hey...thanks alot for the compliments fellows!

TC...you should definately start....miniature making is quite the good time...

Nice work man.

If you want the full effect, try to make the old potassium permanganate volcano that we made in chemistry class. It does the whole smoke effect and viscous lava going up through the inside of the cone and down the slope realistically.

The stuff is orange though, so you'll need to add some coloring or tweak it in post.

It's good tha you're doing it outside, that stuff is noxious.

All I did in my backyard yesterday was make hot dogs. This is much more impressive. Very cool. Or hot. Whatever.

hey thanks....i'm glad you guys think it looks cool.

anhar....there is some smoke/steam looking stuff from the light burning both the plastic and the pie filling.

If you make the lava less viscous, you can have lighter, thinner flow and smaller bubbles which will look great when you slow them down in post.

I'm pretty sure that most miniatures are either shot in slo-mo or slowed in post since it really helps to sell the large scale that you want to achieve.

I need to try this!

That is pretty damn impressive.

I agree that if you slowed it down just a little, it would convey more weight and thickness to the lava. But very inventive and well done.

Awesome work.
