Volcano Test

That looks fantastic. Lemon pie filling? That's really inventive.

In case you were curious, many times lava in movies is made from Methyl Cellulose (methcel for short just a food thickener for things like ketchup) which is mixed with dayglo orange or other kinds of coloring and then bits and crumblies are mixed in and it is lit from underneath (like you did) to make it glow more.

Thanks for the compliments

Matt...your probably right...if it was slowed down it would probably be more realistic. I'm not very good at doing any slo-mo stuff with my dvx. I havnt tried any of that 60i half speed stuff...but perhaps if I filmed it that way that would do the trick.

Cool lights...
Actually that star wars featurette is what got me interested to try this. I didnt know where I could get ahold of any of that thickener....so I tied to find something similar and the pie filling ended up working alright.

I slowed it to about 1/3 speed and that was a little too slow, 1/2 was nice. I didn't use the 60i trick, because that effectively cuts your resolution in half. I used software to do it. Don't worry about being good at slow mo stuff, everyone has their niche. I certainly couldn't have designed that.

I posted a sticky list of practical SFX links in the SFX forum and at the bottom of it is a resource for special materials like methcel which has a ton of uses in SFX.

But here are some of the places that carry it:

It's not hazardous and its used also as "slime" in movies a lot...

I'll have to try slowing it down and see how it looks. What software do you use?

thats an awesome post...i dont know how I havnt seen it before. Ill be referencing that for quite awhile.

Yeah, I really love practical special effects. Not that photographic ones aren't cool but there's some things (maybe even volcanoes) that look better when done live (so-to-speak). Besides, how many of us can really master the 3D tools to the point of getting it super photorealistically right. ;-)

By the way, on this slowing down thing. So the slowing down we can do in after effects is good enough then? Don't have to shoot high speed?

I remember watching that and wanting to go out and start doing stuff like that but I still havent :(
