i recently recorded a concert with my friends canon hf20 because my d90 couldnt handle a 2 hour concert. im just curious and asking if this is normal. 2 hours on standard quality took up about 4 gb or so on the sd card and when i imported the clips into imovie straight from the camera.... all the clips take up 34 GB on my hard drive. some of the 15 minute clips are 5-6 gb each. is this normal? does that mean they were highly compressed when in the camera?

Sounds about right. Imovie has to transcode the material to AIC before it can be edited, this codec takes up far more space than the h.264 that AVCHD uses.
