Vixia HF100 audio help needed

Still playing with my new Canon VIXIA HF100 and tried external mic and headphones last night. When I monitor audio with headphones (ear buds actually) there is nothing but static noice in the R channel, R ear bud (and yes did go into the menus and change the AV/Mic option to Mic). Same when listening to an audio clip playback. L channel is fine. The mic jack is definitely pushed all the way into the mic input, and the mini jack of the headphones is also pushed all the way in. What is going on? This is not good, if this is normal, it really sucks for monitoring and listening back to audio. Mic is a pretty cheap $50 shotgun microphone with miniDV cable.

Hi,

Have you gone into the menus and set the attenuation?

It tends to be very loud, too. Put it on manual and bring it down a bit.

No, have not set attenuation to ON. I think it is OFF (at coffeeshop now, will check when I get home). How would that affect mono/stereo and turn off one of the stereo channels though? I plan to shoot my very first short film (5 minutes long) in a few weeks, I need to get this figured out, getting worried about the audio.

Damn, I should have kept my Canon XH-A1 that I sold six months ago, not I am stuck with this little consumer camcorder that has me worried. I'd like to use my consumer HF100 for 6-12 months, then figure out what prosumer solid state flash memory camcorder to buy once I know I can successfully make a few shorts without over stressing.

Working! Okay I am officially an idiot. I could swear I had it set right before, but this morning I made sure to change AV setting to phones, THEN i plugged in ear bugs and have stereo as it should be, both L and R good. Whew. I thought maybe the system was defective, or only output mono to one channel. Battery drained so I am charging it now. Battery life sucks. I ordered a 2x life battery that should arrive any day so i can always have a spare battery charged and ready to go. Will play with audio more later once i have battery power. Thank you all!

This is normal. You have to go scroll to system settings and change av to phones .

It defaults back to av if I remember correctly when you change from playback to recording and battery change. So you have to keep setting it back to phones when you want to listen. Its in the manual
