Vivitar 70-210mm 3.5 OR 2.8-4.0 (Series 1) - which one would you recommend?

the 3.5 version can be made by Kiron or Tokina, I had both.... the Kiron version focuses really close, but some say the Tokina version is a little sharper...and lighter. The f/2.8-4 version is made by Komine and some say is the best of the bunch. But I have never used it

get the 3.5 version!

get the 3.5 version!

Title says it all...

Get the 70-210 3.5 Series 1

I own it, great lens. And it a nice lens to shoot video with. f-stop doesnt change which is great. There are some nice reviews of this lens online. And the f3.5 version is so much better then the F2.8-4.0. Dont botter getting the 2.8-4.0 version even if its way cheaper.

I have the Tokina 80 - 200 f4 RMC in FD mount and it's sharp and contrasty all the way thru the range. Also nice build quality. I also have the vivitar but don't use it anymore now i have this.

I bought a tripod lens ring mount off ebay that allows the lens to support the camera rather than the other way round. Fit's perfectly on the breechlock ring and still allows aperture adjustment with the lens ring and full zoom/focus range. I leave the lens ring and adapter mount permanently on this lens.

I don't doubt that Ron, but low-cost is kind of the point... ;)

Fair enough! To be honest, I hadn't priced the Vivitars in awhile. When I was looking for one several months ago in a Nikon mount, I was surprised to see the prices steadily rising. People were practically giving them away a year and a half ago, and when I last looked they were nearing or exceeding $100 on average. I kind of thought they were still rising in price, but a check of eBay today shows that they leveled off and even seem to have dropped a bit. So the gap between the Nikon and the Vivitar is bigger than I realized. That being said, if you can find one decently price on Craigslist (that's where I found mine), the Nikon is stellar. I rarely use mine because I simply can't use a lens that long for most shooting, but when I do it never fails to impress. The Vivitar also comes highly recommended. Good luck on your search.
