Vista and HVX200

NOTE THIS THREAD QUICKLY DEGINERATED INTO A "MICROSOFT IS BAD" THREAD AND DOES NOT HAVE ANY SUBSTANTIVE TECHNICAL INFO REGARDING VISTA AND HVX200.

Anyone record direct from HVX200 --> Firewire --> Vista (Premium or Ultimate) via Windows MovieMaker?

The HD codes are a differentiator between Premium/Ultimate versions and other Vista versions.

I know it requires a hard disc that runs at 5400 RPS (about 1/2 laptops have HDs with this speed) and about 2G RAM but am wondering if anyone has used this to shoot footage.

The value is that you have larger HD space (e.g., easily 90 minutes at 1080i 24p with a 100G HD) than the firestore and don't require special software to record HD.

second question: So anyone record into a laptop / Mac in a backpack with HVX200 and have cooling issues?

Basically I am trying to avoid the numerous $1200 PS2 cards or Firestore and to be able to film 90 minutes+ concert footage.

Thanks in advance,
Tree

As far as I know, there is no evidence that you can capture directly to Vista with the HVX.

For starters, I can't find anything that suggests that Vista has DVCPROHD codecs, only HDV codecs. And even if it does have the codecs, that doesn't necessarily mean you can capture live streaming video with it...

I tried searching on this issue via Google, but haven't found anything. What is your assertion based on?

Since most of your posts so far have been about Vista, and how great you seem to think it is, I don't feel out of line by stating how worthless Vista is...

If you could capture directly with the HVX using Vista, that would indeed be a great feature. But sadly, not enough to redeem an insidious operating system that takes away your freedoms and locks you down with DRM.

That said, I have a Beta copy of Vista (for research purposes only, I assure you). I'll load it on my notebook and test out your theory tomorrow...

It wasn't an assertion, it was a question - has anyone successfully did it? I am trying to save money. PS2 cards are a ridiculous joke to maximize profit by Panasonic.

Thought I would ask a user group that is most likely to own all the HW and could test Vista now that it is available on Monday.

I am moving to Vista and want to know what I need to do to make the HVX200 work with it.

Does that justify my post on a public internet board or do I need to do more like pay you hush money?

My response to you is that you are intellectually naive to assume that an inantimate object is insidious and your freedom is being locked down by an OS - simply don't use it if you are so concerned. Do you also believe that there is Heaven and Hell and some omniscient being really cares about you and "intelligently designed" apple to be better than windows? I believe you meant to say that Microsoft is insidious but that is giving you the benefit of the doubt, Honorable Tony.

But, if you are going to test it, I would appreciate it, as long as you are using Vista Premium or Ultimate (neither of which I think you are... by the way, I assure you) which have additional HD codecs as you noted. Otherwise your "research" is for naught. Your point that it might not work is good feedback.

BTW, I don't justify myself to "presidents" unless I respect the bigot first. You have a long way to go to earn that respect. I don't really think it is an issue as I don't expect to hear from you again on this topic.

Best,
Tree

PS - thought I would make this interesting at "president" Tony's expense to see if others have experience with Vista and HVX200. Thanks in advance.

You are correct in assuming that the Beta version of Vista is not the Premium or Ultimate version. My apologies for missing that detail in your post.

While I wouldn't normally bring this thread to the top of the page by responding, I feel the need to defend myself, at least briefly:

My attacks on Vista are not based on "bigotry" as you suggest, nor are they based on any love for Macs. They are *almost* as guilty.

I call Vista "insidious" because of the fact that it does in fact take away your freedom to use the product(s) you purchased. Product Activation forces you to ask Microsoft for "permission" before you can reinstall. DRM in media files you create keeps you from moving them to other machines you own. "Genuine Advantage" checks often come up with false-positives, keeping legitimate users from using their system properly. The list goes on and on...

Since you choose to ridicule me, I will further justify myself. I am in fact, the President of a small business, and while I am nobody particularly important, it is in fact my title, so it is appropriate for my signature. You need not pay me "hush money," but I am as entitled to my opinion as you are.

You speak of respect. Yet while I did not call you names or attack you personally, you choose to do so to me. I find that lacking of respect. I have done my best to be a contributing part of this community, and if you intend on doing the same, I hope you do not attack the others here as you did me.

Let us end this here. If you wish to speak further, let us do so via private messages.

Tony,

You should do more introspection - if you want to hijack a thread to share your (aggressive, negative) personal Vista opinions because someone is asking technical advice related to Vista, then you should be prepared to have a backlash. Next time I might suggest that you start your own thread that discusses DRM, Genuine Advantage rather than piling that **** on someone who is just looking for advice about using a product from a respected technical community. The analogy here is that every time someone asks a PS2 question, I don't feel I have the right to share my negative views on Panasonic's choice to monetize on *another* card standard.

If I want to read the "Microsoft is bad" arguments, I will go to slashdot.com....

Yes. And I'd like to offer all DVXuser.com registered users a free HVX200, one 16GB P2 card, one Mac laptop (with OS 13 codenamed Viagra) and a Zune.

To redeem, please submit your info via personal message at the following myspace site that will process all orders (expect shipping in 6-8 weeks; IRS regulations require sharing of your SS# or tax payer ID if US resident).

Aggressive and confrontational attitudes rarely generate helpful responses. This board is full of very knowledgeable people.

BTW, the are p2 cards, not ps2 cards.

Vista is an OS, not a means to record DVCProHD natively via firewire. I've heard nothing of this capability in any app, Mac or PC.

Your best bet is OS X.4.8 and something like ScopeBox on a Mac, or XP and DVRack 2.0 HD.

p2 cards are expensive, but economical as well if used with an enlightened workflow. These boards are full of that debate.
