Visited Peter Jackson today...

... got to hand-deliver his copy of The HVX Book!

Sort of a blog entry: Fascinating visit, got to tour WETA Workshops and met with Peter and some of his staff members to give them a one-on-one version of the HVX Training Seminar. Peter is incredibly gracious and very, very, very sharp -- an exceptionally intelligent man, and a nice, nice guy. He and Jabez and the rest of the staff were so pleasant to work with, and it was really delightful to see items from his collection, and of course various sculptings and props and costumes and armor and weapons and miniatures and such. I've had my share of props manufactured before, but nothing compares to what WETA craftsmen can do. It seems like an incredible place to work, reminds me of the magic we had back in the early days at Westwood Studios.

This trip has been amazing so far -- stood on the rim of a volcano, walked on the black sand beaches, saw live kiwis and an actual Bogen (aka "Westie") in its natural habitat, and now got to spend time with one of the premiere directors in the world, which is just too cool -- I mean, besides LOTR, this is the guy who directed "Dead Alive", for pete's sake! :)

New Zealand rules. It's an incredible place, full of wonderful, nice, kind people and breathtaking scenery, and I'm grateful I got a chance to come down here. Seminar tomorrow in Wellington is full, but if any NZ residents want to attend one, there are still a few seats available in the Wanaka seminar on Thursday.

Great stuff. Maybe you need to update the "Who is using the HVX?"-Sticky. :)

Ah, yes, I alway wanted to ask you: Just lately, I did play "Dune 2" once again. Have you been involved in that?

I always love to hear that even though someone is at the top of their profession, they are still eager to learn and just be a nice human being.

I'm sure you had your chubby business partner (Mr. HVX) on the volcano and the black sand beaches. I can't wait to see the footage:)

Barry - take in all NZ has to offer - i spent 2 months adventuring around there a couple years ago and it is truly a magical place. Wanaka rocks and if you take some time to go up in the mountains there its amazing. Queenstown, while touristy, has a nice vibe. Fox glacier has a great hike and its about an hour from wanaka. Finally, if you want to see one of the most beautiful places on the planet, try to make it out to milford sound. You cant go wrong there.

Oh, and please tell Peter I said hello and I think he did a terrific job on King Kong :)

PJ is my favourite director. His zombie splatter movies, Brain Dead uncut is a joy to behold. I have all his movies on DVD and followed the making of LOTR from its first inception through theonering.net.

Love to have a few beers with the guy and chat about his early stuff.

I'm "Green" with envy.

You can catch a glimpse of BG popping the Baron Harkonnen's zits.

I'm absolutely Green with envy. Peter is one of my favorite directors and in my mind has opened up the process with his Production Diaries. Congrats Barry and while I wish it were me, I still enjoy hearing about others success.

Oh man! I'm a huge PJ fan and I'm so excited to hear that he's interested in the HVX. Must of been amazing!

Any idea what he's shooting with it Barry, is it fx, green screen, is he using it on any current projects ?

I was wondering the same thing.
I see a lot of big time directors are using the HVX- but on what?

(I almost brought my HVX to Paris to film "home movie" footage.
But it would have been too heavy and it cost too much $$ to have anything happen to it. I took the DVX instead.)

WOW, maybe Pete will film The Lovely Bones digitally. That would be awesome.

I wonder if hes ever checked out this forum?

or how many other big name directors have.

Did you get a chance to sit in his personal theater? He just got some chairs made that move in sync with the action throughout certain movies, including the Lord of the Rings trilogy and King Kong.

(For those interested, the chairs are made by D-BOX Technology: www.d-box.com and are pretty awesome)
