Vimeo introduces monetization options

https://vimeo.com/blog/post:523

Today, we’re taking one of the most important steps in our evolution as a service, a company, and a community. We're proud to introduce Vimeo Creator Services, our new suite of simple, powerful tools to help creators make more money for doing what they do best: entertaining us, engaging us, baffling and outright dazzling us with amazing work.

This is wonderful news!!!! I'm so fed up with Youtube.

*edit* no ads, just a tip jar option. It won't replace my youtube channel for now, but it's a good start.

I hate the idea. Youtube is full of total rubbish and vimeo pretty free of it, now vimeo will be courting quantity and low quality, and attracting the same low quality content as youtube - I'm paying vimeo for membership, I'll have to rethink if it starts to go downhill as a result of trying to compete with youtube.

It's a bit like throwing away the good stuff for downmarket transferral - I don't like it at all - sorry.

Paul, I think you are interpeting this wrong. Vimeo is not adding advertising, just a "tip" button if someone would like to contribute to a film maker. It is nothing more than another button. It costs anywhere from $50-$250 for me to make my nature videos that I post on Vimeo for viewers to enjoy. I try to cover some of my costs by selling clips as stock video. If I can get a few more dollars back, that will help fund my next effort. What did give me pause in reviewing the user agreement is Vimeo gets 15% of the donation. I think that is excessive. If the tip button is set up as a Paypal link to the filmmakers Paypal account, I don't see that Vimeo does much of anything to earn their 15%.

Looks like Vimeo takes 15%...and PayPal will probably grab somewhere around 3%....but I guess SOMETHING is better then nothing.
Only available to Plus & Non-Commercial PRO members.

It will be interesting to see what happens.

Just another way for these companies to profit from your videos.

Not to mention if users activate the tip jar they better have all their rights cleared and paid for as a money making project. Most of the videos I see on Vimeo doubtfully have properly cleared the rights to the music/pictures/brandnames etc.

When money comes so do those looking for their cut.

SWEET! What a god send, I've been anxiously awaiting for a way to monetize my test videos!

But seriously, could be kinda cool if you wanted to monetize a real film. So many actual artists not getting their cut from netflix and other services. I would love watching indie films on vimeo and actually being able to a give a bit here and there to the creators. I'm all for this.

That seems to be what the pay-to-view option will be for.

You mean the largest video hosting service outside of Youtube.. the one curated for the creators and not the consumers (which is what sets it apart from the dreck). You say "these companies" like Vimeo is another Youtube.

I Just cant' imagine people tipping? I mean don't get me wrong it seems pretty awesome, but I've never thought to myself no matter how good the video is, man wish I could tip these film makers... but who knows maybe it'll catch on (and now that its available maybe I WILL want to tip for the efforts..haha) Good luck everyone(;

There needs to be a way then to implement this in a way that works with the set top access to Vimeo. I'm not paying for any lengthy content that requires me to sit in front of my computer.

Absolutely. There are already a number of 30-90 minute shorts and features on Vimeo, and I could see more being put on there with a pay-to-view option that is accessible via set top services. I just hope there is no DRM or anything like that, but Vimeo is pretty good about steering clear of those types of things.

Vimeo is turning into YouTube and I have plans to move my video clips to some place like Brightcove especially after discovering a video on Vimeo this morning of a guy waving his erect johnson at the camera, repeatedly. I mentioned it (after flagging it) in their Help forum and was told that "Non sexual nudity is allowed on Vimeo."

So long Vimeo.

Its a good move.

People could probably use it as a kind of Kickstarter program too (for those of us who can't use Kicakstarter due to geographical restrictions that is; you could set up a Facebook page linked to a vimeo advert for the project you are trying to get off the ground; people could tip directly on the advert to support the project). There are lots of ways to use this. It will be interesting to see how it works.

My vimeo numbers crush my youtube numbers. I have a 26 minute short film that has been watched 1500 times on Vimeo and about 200 times on youtube. Similar ratios for my other stuff.

This seems interesting, it's good for people looking to raise a bit of money for upcoming projects.
