I'm new here - long time lurker without registering. I've finally got something worth asking/registering about, so her goes:

From experience, have you noticed a large difference shooting handheld video with and image stabilization lens as opposed to a non image stabilization lens?

I'm looking to better equip my 7D for video, and I'm pretty set in a IS USM (if I go Canon anyway) lens.

Thanks for you input.

my experiecne of IS is that it is good for lockoffs and the mildest pans or tilts only

have a watch http://www.vimeo.com/13413361

The first sequence (office) there are some over the shoulder cutaways - here IS is helping me

the second sequence (car) you can see some jerks in the footage that is the IS resetting because the camera has been subjected to too much movement

I went on to shoot a train sequence - no is - and it is much smoother than the car sequence

probably not your problem right now but I also have a non IS 400 2.8 - I find that alsmost unusable - IS would be appropriate for such a tele lens unles you have a $5k tripod

You've got some beautiful shots in your rough cut.

Thanks for your input, greatly appreciated. I see how the IS can work either way!

I shot some video of my dad on father's day riding his motorcycle. I used a 70-200 4L and a 17-55mm 2.8 IS. I had the camera on a tripod in the back seat of my truck with the rear window rolled down. The side shots were handheld. The non-IS lens showed so much vibration compared to the IS it was amazing.

Here's a link to the video. It was just shot for fun, not a serious attempt by any means, I'm only posting it to show the difference IS makes... at least when shooting from a vehicle.
