Video with GH2 and Lomo anamorphic lens on a cold, foggy day

Check his Vimeo link - a little more info there http://vimeo.com/19380899

He's using a Polish PL mount (Ceico7's maybe?) and a 35mm Squarefront :)

Can only guess at his rig (or lack of it) - simonstar needs to answer that!

Interesting edit - the dog wins it for me

The slowmo/720P looks a bit soft... but I do love how these old Cinema lenses render colours and tone.

Hello Together.

Here a bit more info:

Shot with the GH2 and a Polish PL-Mount adapter. Used only the 35mm lens. 1080p24 and 720p50 mixed. All conformed to 25p. Edited with Avid. Slight color correction.

The lenses seem quite soft when wide open. They are sharp at 5.6
The PL mount adapter is from Ceico7

I dont't use a rig. Only the adapter and the lens mounted to it.

what is a bargain price for a 35mm LOMO?

If you want a Lomo 35mm Squarefront (1960's to 1980's), a PL mod or original Oct-19 mount expect to pay around $1500 (more or less depending on lens condition, coating of the glass, scratches on the element etc)... you can get Oct-18 mounts too - but they're more of an adapter/lens combo that needs support - all the Oct-18 Squarefronts have lens supports built in - Oct-19's don't... these are cheaper (but not by that much ATM).

35mm Roundfronts (the later version from the 80's) range between $3000-$4500, again, depending on condition. The 35mm Round is a bigger lens (more glass) than it's square cousin.

You do get a lot of barrel distortion on the 35mm's - some DP's prefer the older Sqaurefront to the newer (and heavier) Roundfront.

You can get cheaper - but a lot of the stuff that comes up is ex film-school or really used/damaged... if you get something that's got lens damage, there's not much you can do (fixing will destroy the look).

Hope that helps.

The 50mm & 80mm normally are quite sharp at T4 & beyond - the 35mm is normally OK from there also, but simonstar is right, sharpness/focus/edge focus increases at higher T-stops.

I think some of the softness was 720>1080p upscaling (as well as using lower T-stops)... ?

On handheld, try the 50mm for a while... it gets heavy (as does the 80mm)! :)

PS - watched again, the dog still makes me laugh (it's sort of saying, 'yeah - doing my business... so what are you looking at?' as it turns around) - probably just me. LOL

thanks! :)
i didn't quite got the lens support issue between the 18 and 19..
can you please explain it with some jpegs ?

Oct-18's are 2 piece lenses... the 35mm lens itself and the Squarefront. Due to the 2 piece design, the front Square lens normally comes with a support bracket built in. Image shows a 35mm & a 50/80mm block (generic Squarefront used on both lenses).

Oct-19's are still two piece lenses, but generally are in a single 'element' making it easier to use on shoots, as you don't need lens support (although it's wise to have for the 80mm). The unit can be split (never done this) but Oct-19's are more robust (IMO).

The difference between Oct-18 & Oct-19 I presume comes from the differing film camera systems they were used on (Konvas & Kinor to name two primary ones).

Hope that helps :)

I'm often curious as to why no one has tried to just use the square front anamorphic element in front of nikon or canon prime lens. You would have to build into a matte box to allow to for front element movement, but should work as well or better than projection adaptors like the kowa.

Some people are doing this - Andrew Reid (EOSHD) is one of them. I've been helping out on a Cinema5D thread about this subject & Lomos in general. One guy welded an old Squarefront block and made a custom adapter. Personally, I like original Lomo creamy look :)
