Video walk-through explanation for first-time GH1 hack.

I noticed that in PTools under AVCHD Copression it prompts you to use three patches to make the hack work could you explain a little about that

You're welcome.

Now I realize that YOU didn't ask for this, but this is a general statement to anybody who watches this video and wants ME to provide the original Panasonic 1.32 firmware image.

I will not send or provide any files! I won't even answer any PM's asking me to do so. Not because I'm a jerk, but because I don't want that level of responsibility for your success, or that level of liability (legal or otherwise) in providing files.

What you can do that would help us is to tell us the MD5 or SHA1 hash of the firmware you have. That is legal under any circumstances, and it'll allow us to compare the hash for the firmware we have with the hash for yours. If they match, we definitely have the same firmware.

PTool already does this for you.

Perhaps it's paranoia to think that Panasonic would have altered the 1.32 download that we all got weeks ago... but the reason I mentioned this in the video is because of the other "hack-block" developments. If it were ME... I would be very hesitant to trust that download today.

:)

Yes, unnecessarily paranoid. I made it clear in my post a few days ago that there's absolutely nothing wrong with the official Panasonic download. I actually did the tests. It allows ver 1.2 to be hacked. It's the mysterious 1.34 they've put on at the factory that's the problem.

Wow...even I'm not that suspicious of Panasonic!

The vids are great though.

Thanks for the FANTASTIC tutorial! It should be a sticky. Very simple and easy to understand.

I have a hacked GH1 arriving via ebay in the next day or two. The seller says its already hacked to the "C" settings. We both live in Australia so I assume it's a PAL version.

Is there any way for me to check if the camera really is hacked when it arrives? Or should I just go ahead and rehack it? And if I do rehack it over someone else's hack, are there any considerations I should be aware of?

MANY THANKS

Another vote for making this a stickie

Having successfully hacked using 3.37d, I couldn't on 3.40d - I'd forgotten about the version compare number increment thingy - D'oh!

I watched the videos a couple of times before I hacked, then again mid the hacking process just so I could confirm I wasn't going to make a silly mistake.
The video clearly explained a couple of things I just couldn't understand from reading dozens of hack threads here. especially as many discussions are either contradictory or veer off into complicated tech-speak.
Anyway, in short, my hacking exercise went through perfectly first time and I'm already enjoying the improvements to the camera.
Thanks for making these videos which helped a lot.

+1 for making this one a stickie.

After watching these video, I am quite confident in going ahead hacking my GH1. Now I 'm just researching for which patch will suit my loking.

+1 for sticky!

Great video Matt, you might want to incorporate Diego's excellent point into your first post :

Also, ignore "Limiting Bitrate," it no longer shows up on PTools, but it doesn't matter. Ignore that bit, and follow the rest of the video, and you'll have a hacked camera in no time.

This will likely freak newbies out if they watch the vid, then try using the software and "Limiting Bitrate" isn't there.

PTool actually looks a bit different now from the version in the video.
The video explains the basic do's and don't's very well though, and I found it was invaluable to my successful hack on first attempt.

I got my camera today and decided to hack it using the video. The hack went fine, but the camera is now in Japanese!!!!!!!!!!!!

How do I get it back to English?!

I selected "all Interface Languages" and it said you can select any supported language via normal language menu.

But how do I do that exactly?

And am I right to assume the Japanese version is NTSC?

MANY THANKS

I don't think this needs to be a sticky.

There are a couple points that waver back and forth (which Vitaliy cleared up)... as well as the Ptool looking a little different, etc.

If I redo the video... explaining everything exactly right (and a little more concise)... plus better production values, maybe then, but not as it is. This was done in a rush for my Fat Monster friends out in LA... they were calling me about hacking a couple GH1s and I thought I made it sound simple on the phone... but the guy doing it was still a little confused on some points... the same points that confused me on my first hack... so I rushed this video together in just a couple hours.

I put it here because when I first hacked my own GH1 I had some anxiety about it... especially because I read several conflicting ideas regarding the hack in threads where people seemed to really know what they were talking about. It was a little scary having the "brick" idea in the back of my head the whole time... and I felt like some key aspects of the Ptool weren't really explained anywhere.

So... sticky? If it were me I'd vote "no"... but I am very glad that it's helped some people confidently hack their cams.

Nice job man.
I waited two months to hack my camera, as like you I kept picking up contrary advice on the forum.
Your video helped me hack perfectly first time.
The footage looks fantastic.
Huge thanks to Vitaliy too and all the testers along the way.

Thank you thank you thank you Mattin. I was getting VERY confused reading the other beginner threads. This made it easy. I flashed with confidence using lpowell's settings and was successful! Now time to shoot my first project :D

By the way, for those wondering with old firmware, I have a very early GH1 and never ever flashed firmware on it. I was perfectly fine and didn't have to upgrade to 1.32 first, I simply used 1.32 in ptool and hacked it and loaded that on and all went well.

another satisfied customer. takes a bit of work, and searching, and know-how, but it's not rocket surgery. show us the footage (when you have some)yabyum!

hehe, when i can! i gotta post more stuff but been really busy lately. deadlines and all :)

btw, i just loaded modulr 4:2:2 MJPEG ~100mb/s settings via mpgxsvcd's post in the settings thread and it is really really spectacular. for most of my stuff i don't need in camera playback so i'm pretty happy. btw, mpg's settings were made for a GF1 but they work fine on my GH1 so far.
