I'd like to test out the GH1 this summer and was thinking in advance about workflow, but I don't want to have to buy a new computer to do it! I have a 3 GHz P4, which handles native HDV editing fine (using Vegas Pro 8.0). I believe Vegas can handle AVCHD (?), but I'm sure my computer's too old to handle it for realtime editing. Therefore I could adopt a proxy workflow, so my question is: can anyone post suggestions for a cheap (or free!) video utility which will take in AVCHD files? I'd like to be able to make good quality SD size AVIs from AVCHD clips, which would be used for the off-line. And if required, I'd also like to be able to later export from the AVCHD clips best quality uncompressed AVIs or sequence frames for possible future on-line requirements. Can anyone whose already worked with AVCHD camcorder footage suggest something (Windows-only, please). Perhaps I could use Vegas itself for the conversion, but it would be nice to instead have an efficient little utility on my second machine, not the editing workstation. I'm hoping to find something like VirtualDubMod which has lots of options, but is compatible with AVCHD. I've tried doing some searches myself but not got very far, besides, I spend enough time reading these camera threads! So could someone give me the heads up on their recommended utilities? Thanks.
