Hey guys. Heres a video I shot recently with my dvx100b, and M2 combo. This is my 4th video, and everytime out I'm descoverying brand new challenges. Now I understand what you guys meant by go out and shoot. Because the field has away of teaching you what a text book won't. Anyway be kind. I feel as though I'm growing. A few of you may have seen some of the 1st vids I did a couple of months ago. Let me know. I have been having problems with whites in daylight as you'll see.

BTW, be sure to give the stream 30 to 40 second minimize any jitters.

Why is the image squished? You might want to look into that. And speeding up the beginning logo/credit thingy, just an opinion, I know Hype Williams does it but damn...

I will have to get back to you on the squished thing. It doesn't look that way on my laptop footage. :Drogar-Kriz(DBG):

You know what I thought of that on the logo drop, but didn't carry through. I should have put some speed on the logo drop. I'll be honest, I'm more experimenting than anything.

I didnt mind the shots you chose at all and found the editing nice and raw which suited the feel. I think some extra coverage would help. Some different angles when they are all dancing in a group and other cuts would be good, seemed very reliant on a few shots. I liked the simple concept of "when Daddy's away" - who cant relate to that. Your dolly shots were solid and smooth.

I have to be honest, I was an Erik B and Rakeem fan way back, saw them live with Run DMC - and since those days have felt hip hop take a nose dive, your clip showed me something different than the gangsta waving his gold teeth and $ signs.

One other thing, I thought you didnt over do the M2 at all and created a nice combination of shallow and deep DOF shots. Some good choices.

One thing, at the start when the two guys get the call I thought it looked a tad flat. Pull that couch out from the wall - and get something in behind for texture. Try never to shoot a couch flat against a wall. Its a shitty place to do anything with it.

Nice work.

Thanks ncje,
Your input is really, really appreciated. I realized in editing that the dance scenes were limited. I thought I shot enough, but once I began to capture the footage I realized I should have shot more. It would have been an easy thing to do too.

I'm glad you noticed. Very few clients want fun these days with the hiphop videos. Everyone wants gansta so it was fun to do this one. These guys were 16 and 17 years old and full of energy.

M2? What can I do about the vigetting in my footage. Any lenses, or settings you would recommend to reduce the effect. I like it in some footage, but I could of done without it in this video? I'm using Canon FD lenses so I know I can't ask for much out of them.

I will try pulling the couch out next time. I tried everything but that.

Again thanks for the advice.

Always appreciated.

thats Eric B and Rakim.

not much to say about the video
:violent5:

How about the video was nice it showed growth from his first videos and the fact that this is his 4th video (some people don't get to shoot one) LAMES...............

I myself liked the video and yes I have seen your other work and I can see the growth , can't wait to see the 5th one. GOOD LUCK

I thought it was well shot and edited. I think some extra angles and c/u during the performance and dancing is the only thing missing (pretty much repeating what ncje just said...hmmm). It seemed like the hummer was really blown out in that one shot. I don't know if that's cause exposure problems or just the compression.

Do you have a less compressed version that we can check out....I feel like the myspace crap compression is ruining the experience. With all the "do this dance" songs out these days, it seems like this one would fit right in.

Thanks

Thanks Mike. I had a lose 4 words there:dankk2:

It was definitely blown out. I was having a very hard time with it. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

my only recomendation which is what i recommend to all rap videos most of the time is that i say shoot your girls like you shoot your artists shoot them from different angles. everybody has the knee up shot but go in to her face for another shot. i usually shoot 45 seconds solo one angle then go to another then go to another with about 3 for each girl. i think it rounds the video out more and gives it more depth and less repetition in terms of cuts.

I liked many things about this video... The one thing I liked most is that it had a bit of a Story and that it made sense in regards to the song... It had a third act... With that in mind, I give it a thumbs up...
Few questions;
Did you shoot in 16x9 on the DVX? (maybe why your having a squishing issue).

Vingeting with M2, What lenses did you use? 50mm or Lower like a 35mm...
I think your Vingeting is caused by your Z Setting and your Back Focus...
I know you know what your doing with the setup with your M2 however, there should be no reason why you should be getting that much Vingeting with the M2...

Oh... here's the suggestion...
Move with the Camera... I know its hard as hell with an M2... but Move... even if shots shake.
The bar shots were nice with the dolly feel... Some pulls and pushes would have been awsome....
Anyhoot... Its far better than anything I've ever done...
I want to see a better quality version... Please get one up...

Last Note: Tell the artist they did a great job with the production of the song itself as well as writing a pretty good hook...

That sound like winner sebassttiann.
That is a quick and easy way to get fill footage.

I shot in 16x9. I will have to back track my steps and figure out what went wrong.

As far as my lenses I used a Canon FD 50mm f1.8, & 28mm f1.8 for the closer shots.

I believe you were on the right track when you mentioned my Z setting. I had it set at Z84. Is there a Z & back focus setting that will give me optimal focus and less vigeting?

Thanks for the great input sebassttiann & NC17z.:dankk2:

I liked that. All suggestions I would make have already been stated. More angles ect... The song was very catchy too.

My question is on such a seemingly low budget hiphop video, what is the process for acquiring the females?

With a DVX your always going to run to a bit of latitude trouble from time to time. A white vehicle blowing out because you didnt want to underexpose the rest. I would suggest next time, the hummer is the subject in the shot expose that right and care less about the background. I think the overall look would be better.

I simply left the responsibility of getting dancers to the client. If the budget would have been alittle more I would have gladdly called in some more professional talent. The one lead girl was paid, and the rest were friend and family of the label owners.

You hit it right on the head. I was so affraid of getting an underexposed background shot that I over did the subject.
