"Video recording has stopped automatically"

I was recording a meeting yesterday for a behind the scenes documentary I am making. After about 30 minutes of recording the camera began stopping the recording every 10-15 seconds and giving me the message "Video recording has stopped automatically". I had never had this before so I was really confused. The only thing I could think of was that the camera was overheating, but would it really do that after only 30 minutes of recording? I've never shot for such a long period of time before but if these cameras are only able to record in short spurts i'm going to be very disappointed.

There able to record about 12-16 minutes at a time. After they reach a 4GB limit they stop recording, you can start recording again immediately.

When the camera starts to overheat you get a flashing red icon telling you its overheating. How long you can record depends on the conditions. I've never had the camera stop recording because of overheating.

What kind of CF Card are you using? Did you format the card in the camera? Where you taking stills at the same time?

If your shooting stills along with video it fragments the CF Card and can't buffer fast enough.

No fix, but this happened last week on my T2i. Card was close to full but not completely. Used it a dozen times since and no issues.

No I was not shooting stills. As far as my card goes, the card I had in their was a 4gb SDHC card from PNY that I was borrowing from my sister incase I needed more space, but i did format when I put in the camera. And I don't remember any kind of red blinking light, but there was this bar that showed up on the right side of the screen that looked like a vertical battery power bar and I didn't know if that had anything to do with it.

The same exact thing happened to me! I was using a class6 Sandisk 8gb sdhc card. And i had used about60-70% of the memory. I dont know why It happened though, maybe because it had been some time since i reformated the whole card. I had just deleted some files manually from my PC. Hmm maybe the card was to fragmented??

Yeah i learned i can avoid this problem most of the time, if i switch cards at about the 13-14GB mark. Its the mark on the 7D, where the pictures you have left dips below the 999 number. I also reformat the card before every single shoot. Good rule of thumb.

jon!

Yeah I think I had used about 60% of the card memory when this started to happen, and the card is a bit old so it's probably not Class 6. Will definitely buy a new card before my next shoot. Thanks much for the info, i'm glad it's the card and not my camera.
