Video playback issues

Hello everyone,

As of late last week, I just purchased a Canon 7D. Today, I shot a little HD video test footage with it. When played back on my Mac, the Quicktime clips play fine. But on my Windows 7 machine, it doesn't play smoothly. It jitters and jumps.

I assume this is a codec issue, so can anyone here tell me what codec I would need to download from Quicktime to solve this playback issue? I have the K-Lite Codec pack, and assumed that would include all I needed to make this work on a Windows machine, but I guess not.

Also, I'm going to be eventually installing Final Cut on my Mac machine, but until then, I want to know if any of you can recommend some free movie editing softwares I can view and edit this HD 1080 footage on.

Thank you!

Also, just so I don't come off completely ignorant on this issue, I understand that I should/could also convert the clips into something like Apple ProRes. On my Mac I have Compressor. But what programs could I install on my Windows machine to fix this playback issue? And is this a codec issue I'm facing, or a conversion issue?

Thanks.
