Video Audio Sync 101

Hello this is my situation I have shot a couple of music videos for some friends and they liked them, even got paid for them.....Now I like the whole editing part for the learning side of it all but I do so much hate when I have to manually sync certain clips.
So this poses my question to you guys, you smart caring bundles of knowledge ,lol.....

This is it: Is there a way I could buy some sort of playback device (cd or dat) that has timecode that I could hook up to my DVX100B so that when I bring the audio and video into FCP it would be in perfect sync? And yes I know about the quick fixes like adding beeps in the begining of the audio but I want to know the tech savvy way of doing it. Video is a hobby of mine and I just want to put together a killer rig................THANKS AHEAD OF TIME!

Great question. In the past, I've 'jam-sync'ed' multiple cameras to a DAT player. The timecode came from the DAT and was then daisy-chained down the line with BNC cables to each subsequent camera. Easy enough.

With the DVX though, I'm not so sure. I know a DVX100B will take firewaire sync from another B but I don't know about external sync from another source. I also don't know how you'd get firewire timecode from a DAT playback.

There's gotta be an easy way and I'm sure someone will chime in. Sorry - it's 5 in the morning. Need sleep. I'll dig around later today......

And, hey, dwnsthballer! I may be in Denver but I grew up 'down the road' from you in Lexington. Dad's still there and so is some of the best BBQ in NC.

Hey whats up fevercity and dwnsthballer thanks for the input, I know there has to be a way to do this It would even be nice if there was a timecode program for your computer and yo could just hook up your laptop to the camera via firewire for syncing....just a thought tho. But dwnsthballer your idea seems like the one I will be going with for the time being until I get a full description of how to do this the timecode way.

Sounds like a plan..... I'm still diggin' around but I think a BNC -> firewire conversion would be done through a laptop... just another piece of gear to lug around.

simple easy solution, get two sticks, bang them together on cmaera, and on the live audio track. you synch up the strike with the click on the audio, and youre synched.

I know of the quick fixes I was really interested in how I could do it the timecode way as mentioned in the original post...... I want to be able to sync the DVX100b to another source and be able to have the video and audio pefectly synced. I wonder how it is done in perfesional videos
