The Dude Abides

Guys, please click HERE to view the QuickTime clips entered in VFXFEST2 and place your vote for your favorite so that we can distribute the prizes.

In the next fest we're going to try a non-anonymous approach to allow participants to show work in progress if they choose and to allow discussion of the techniques and tricks being used. We'll have a different voting system next time as well.

I'm curious why there are so many votes for entry #3.... it looked like stock footage to me. Would it make sense to find out what they actually did on the projects before we vote? It was interesting to see people actually cutting different angles together though, very creative.

The problem with VFX is it's not meant to draw attention to itself. Maybe it's stock. Maybe it's all a sham. Who knows.
There will be a breakdown you know.

Personally I'm diggin all of the entry's.

The choppers blew me away.

And I find it interesting 3 out of 4 had robots. Lovin it.

Oh well, were outcasts I guess.

The new rules sound great Mark. Hope to participate in the next one. TowerFan (friend of mine) better be there, haha.
And you other bigshots. Yeah, I went there.

I loved three, I am really wondering how you managed the camera projection. I was working on it, but the perspective change was making it a little too hard to model in the given time - so I gave up.

And mark, I am digging the new rules. Since my schedule is clear after next week - I can actually put some time into it.

There was no footage at all. Only pictures, that's why I think it is so great. The camera flight looked so good in my opinion.

Not having a robot was probably not the best idea :D

I thought it was interesting as well that 3 out of 4 had robots. that could be its own challenge: ROBO-FEST.

I was also surprised that everyone went for action. I guess from the last one, I expected you guys to just do up the landscapes provided like people did with the forest. Like nobody added a doe running around the forest. Or a robot smashing it, for that matter :)

I liked #3, and I don't mind that it used stock, if it did. I mean, it's special efx, pretty much anything should be open game, IMO, whether you use stock, or go out and shoot ants in your yard and make them huge, whatever. But I guess that boils down to how the judging works and what the judging criteria are.

Anyway, cool stuff guys. I'm digging these VFX fests. Looking forward to the next one and esp the breakdowns.

Also, if I may pitch a fest that might be useful down the road: How about "Practical-Fest." Like maybe give out a shot that is messed up somehow and the contest would be fixing it in post. I think that would be super-helpful to the low-budget indie crowd, just to see how much fixing you can do if you have to.

That's a superb idea, Mark. Man, I hadn't thought of that at all and it would be ultra useful to a lot of people. I'm going to give some serious thought to this and discuss it with Matt Grunau to get his thoughts.

Great comments everyone.

Yeah three was teh steez to me. Definetly the best put together. I keep saying I'm going to do something for these but I never do...

That's alright dory. Life always gets in the way when it's fun time. Maybe we'll see you next time. I almost missed this one myself.

I like Marks idea. Been awhile since I've had to fix things and was getting kinda getting good at it. I think I was anyways. In fact most of everything I used to do was just that. I can also help ruin the shot if you need a hand.
Need an extra shadow, a misplaced beer bottle or pop can, a boom mike hanging too low, a chair that wasn't there in the last take, period piece with the actor wearing a watch, rain drops on the lens? :)

I hope I see the next VFX fest announcement, I would like to enter, but saw this one to late.
