Very undecided

Hey everybody,
So I am not yet a HVX owner but was planning on purchasing one soon, but now I dont know what I should do. Should I buy the HVX-200a or should I wait until the HPX-170 comes out. not sure where to go at this point. Any advice would be appreciated.

Well it really depends on your needs. Primarily, if you need to be able to shoot to tape then go with the HVX200a, if you don't need tape then the HPX170. Also if you need this camera immediately then go with the HVX200a since I don't think the HPX170 will be released for a while (someone else may be able to help you out on the date).

However, if I may speculate a little, my guess is that in a year's time the HPX170 will be the more sought after camera.

I would say.. as Barry says.. buy what you need when you need it. If there's a job that you can do now, if there's money to be made now, or a major project then that should be the deciding factor. If you can afford to wait, then it's nice to have options and the 170 looks really nice. I think it just comes down to what is at hand and if you could make 4 or 5K in the meantime.. then it's a no brainer, but it's just deciding upon what your situation is, and if you are itching to buy just to sake of buying or if you have an immediat need...

hope this helps

The plus of the HVX over the 170 is that you will be able to take on gigs that need to be shot on mini-DV. I always shot Beta SP and kinda mocked Mini-DV. I never thought I'd use the tape option, but we actually ended up making enough on mini-DV gigs to pay for the camera.

And as mentioned, if you can make enough in the next couple months, get the HVX now. It's not like it's a $75,000.00 camera. I remember how hard decisions were when it would take years to just pay for the camera. Now you can pay it off with just a few gigs.

Ultimately you gotta make the decision. I wish you all the best. Just remember, if you don't jump in the dance, you'll still be left watching others have all the fun. Don't wait for the "next dance". :)

I am shopping several cameras for different requests we have for content. Our local Panasonic Rep came to our studio with 5 cameras for us to play with for the day, These included:
170
HPX 500
HPX 2000
HPX 3000
HDX 900
D5 and other decks
(Already have 2 HVX 200's)

After 7 hours of intense training and tons of info I have a new understanding of what Barry says

" buy what you need when you need it. If there's a job that you can do now, if there's money to be made now, or a major project then that should be the deciding factor"

And of different gear and how it applies to network demands , shooting environments, workflows, deadlines and delivery.

After all the consideration on all models, for a "B" or pick up cam.. I would take the 170 in a heartbeat, there is some neat stuff the 200 dosent offer that really helps me as a run and gun shooter ...

The reasons for the 200a are: (1) Your need to record SD to tape. (2) You need to use it for a job soon.

Assuming you can wait until September 2008 (+/- a few months) when the 170 comes out. The camera is easier to handhold and has a few more features than the 200a. My understanding is it's going to be about the same price as the 200a.

In my Podcasts, link found at the bottom of this message, both Jan (from Panasonic) and Berry Green talk about the different models (150, 170, & 200a). You may want to check out what they have to say.

Best Wishes,

Bob Diaz
