Very soft reults on DVD

Hi I'm using hmc 40, 1080 x 60, editing in premier pro (CS5) burning DVD in Encore - BUT the results seem very soft and not anywhere near as sharp as they should be. Any possible workflow suggestions to remedy this? The original files seem sharp enough. Any help welcome
BTW Have got Barry's book and receommens it highly!

Thanks - Vince

Hard to say without seeing examples of what you see as the difference. Could well simply be the vertical blur necessary to eliminate flicker in SD interlaced.

Hi - I'll try to p[ost a couple of clips - but basically faces look almost as if they have been editied to look like they were painted or comic-book, with all features not sharp.

Also, it would helpful to detail your workflow to DVD, including editing codec, editor, encoder, and how the footage is being viewed.

PC is windows 7 64bit. Dual Zenon 2.50 GHz. - Using CS5 Premier Pro - capture format HDV - recorded in 1080i x 60, render - mercury playback? - looks fine until I export to Encore. Perhaps I am not using the optimum transcoder or setting for the best DVD in SD? I would be grateful for advice as to what settings give best results in your experience?

I wonder if I should film in 720 rather than 1080 to end up with sd DVDs? I also select adobe media manager to create mpeg for DVD as the final step. Is these a better way?

Kissaki You have to record in 720 30P so the down scaling is minor and, Use Sony Vegas Pro, Vegas does a much better job down scaling to DVD than Premiere
I used to use Premiere for that , and Sony Vegas looks much much better, Don't event try Edius is as bad as Premiere for that.
Premiere is good if you render to HD as well as Edius. Vegas in HD is GREAT as well

You should only record in 30p if you want 30p. The look is entirely different and may not be appropriate for his project. 720 60p will give the same motion characteristics.

I agree that there are fewer problems when downscaling from 720 to SD. I have often taken 1080 footage and downscaled to 720p before downscaling again to SD, and that may help here.

And while I agree that Vegas is better at scaling, it doesn't help him if he doesn't have it . . .

You said you're using an HMC40, right? Then why is your capture format HDV?

Can you elaborate a little more..

How would you do the whole process from Premiere to Vegas?
Edit in Premiere and export timeline to Vegas? Can you do that?
What parameters to downscale?

I'm shooting 720/25....
I need it downscaled to SD DVD

Shot 720 30P , Edit in Vegas pro 10 Render as MPG2 DVD 720x480, 16x9 frame rate 29,970 field order progressive , video quality high 2 pass,
No audio, AFTER that you render the audio WAV, then bring the files to Architect and create DVD.
For my taste 24P in your case 25P looks horrendous .
Nice to help, take it or leave it
