Very impressed with these D300s videos

I like these a lot... the shutter/frame read-time feels to be a bit faster than the Mark2, and overall they have a nice look for 720p, the aliasing issues aren't extremely bad, and there's a kind of warm fuzzy 8mm type grain on all the night exteriors.

The color representation still feels a bit pastel and thin for my taste...

If this camera had manual controls I might consider picking one up....

Oh but then the 7d is being spec'd in the next few days, so...

the dct coeffs are the exact same as the d90's, so no change in jpeg quality at all.

DQT, Row #0: 4 6 5 8 12 20 26 31
DQT, Row #1: 6 6 7 10 13 29 30 28

DQT, Row #7: 36 46 48 49 56 50 52 50
Approx quality factor = 74.94 (scaling=50.12 variance=10.81)

it does look a bit sharper, less jello, and still the same gorgeous nikon colors. MANUAL CONTROL though, wtf...

Geez Matt! Sometimes the comments on this forum just BUST ME UP! I have to read on it everyday just for the entertainment value. YOU GUYS ROCK!

:)

ps.....I am pissed at Nikon for not taking care of business. If the d90 weren't such a great photography camera I would have dumped it. So....the thought of them quietly weeping in the woods is a nice thought for me about now.

I don't think the D90 would have handled those scenes without much more "mushiness". Especially the daytime one with all those bushes. Something seems different.

at the first video, if you pay attention to the left building, you`ll notice similarities with d90 :)

Why doesn't Nikon release a technical white paper that describes in detail exactly what they have done to improve the D.Movie? All we seem to have is marketing mumbo jumbo and this silly guessing game. I just don't understand...they don't act as though they have any respect for their customers sometimes.

well, compression is easy to measure, i just verified there's no improvement there, see above, jello too if you have the camera, just pan and measure the skew as a percentage of the movement (the d90 has around 98%), stairstepping can be seen quite easily, and detail can be measured using a test chart, as can other common parameters like noise and latitude. we don't need a white paper, just a camera.

I suppose it's one marketing ploy (to leave testing to customers) but I still think it is much more professional to publish technical specifications and specify exactly what was done to D.Movie. You know, to properly inform potential customers BEFORE their purchase. Not everybody has your superhuman reverse engineering skills. ;-)

i tend to agree, but *you* don't need to buy the camera, plenty of people will post thousands of tests in no time.

Those tests should be to confirm published claimed technical advances, not attempt to discover any technical advances. If it's the same as D90, Nikon should say so.

they say it isn't. i've never seen camera manufacturers publish white papers on their cameras, if we're lucky we get yet another megapixel rating or insane iso number, that's it. testing is not to confirm, it's to know. i don't see the problem.

No problem...it's a bit like having to determine the spindle speed of your new hard drive by hooking up a tachometer you bought though. Remember a time when beta testing was "to know"? That was before the new model emerged: Let the customers do the beta testing and charge for tech support.

It has probably improved. But how much? Like you said there will be thousands of testers in a few days

nah, it's like measuring its throughput by running a benchmark program. nikon do advertise the fact that it's 720p, 24fps, the size of the sensor and so on, don't they?

And I guess when you give product testing over to the general public, credible groups (like dvxuser) gain importance. But testing isn't about volume, it's about accuracy. Witness your own scepticism about the authenticity of the Best Buy d300s videos...
