Prompted by disbelief in another thread over humble Nero's ability to join and/or edit GH1 AVCHD clips, then output with no loss at data copy speeds to a new file, I thought I'd briefly outline the method.
Note that I'm using PAL footage on a PC.
1 - Run Nero's 'SmartStart' top level menu.
2 - Choose "Create and Edit"
3 - Choose "Author, edit and capture video"
4 - Choose "Make Movie"
5 - Click on the "Browse for Media" icon which is the first icon below the media pool window on the right.
6 - Choose "browse and add to project", navigate to directory and select files (must be the same format of course, eg all 720p in this example).
7 - Wait for Nero to complete the task by displaying all the clips on the timeline. Repeat stage 6 if your footage is in several directories.
8 - If you want, trim the clips as required.
9 - Click on "Export"
10 - Choose "Export video to file"
11 - In the dropdown boxes, choose Format = AVC, Profile = AVCHD compatible, click on "Configure" button.
12 - In the dialog now displayed, choose Quality Setting = HD Ready (for 720p) or Full HD (for 1080i). Don't worry if the frame rate in HD Ready is shown as 25fps, it will actually give you 50. Make sure Nero SmartEncoding is set to "Enable". I don't have any of the tickboxes ticked. I think you should be able to leave all other choices as default.
13 - Ensure that the output file location is what you want, then click on Export button. You should see the video whizz through at high speed in the preview window and the file will be completed.
14 - That's it. Save the project if you want.
At stage 12, you don't want to start messing with the various options there, else that might cause Nero to re-encode the file to accomodate the changes. Basically you are aiming to get an output identical to the original footage. Of course if you add transitions and effects, then you won't get the high speed render. In the case of only transitions, Nero will do a normal render of the transitions and then attempt to integrate the rendered sections with the smart-rendered unchanged remainder - and sometimes the join is obvious.
