Vertical Detail(and other details levels)

More fun questions from me.

I've been having a problem with my shots lately, and it seems to only affect the reds in a noticable way. I read about it in another post, but the solution wasn't explained. My problem is that when I shoot things that are a very red color, I get what looks like streaks running up and down those areas. I figured this may have something to do with the level of Vertical Detail, or the V. Detail Frequency. my guess would be that I'd need to change to Thin, or turn up the vertical detail. any advice would really help me out. thanks you guys.

I notice the effect as well. Normally when HIGH contrasting detail exist.

Recently I had a shot a humming bird feeder with red cups. Same problem you mention, obvious this was outdoors. I was shooting 24p do not remember the shutter iris around 4

After seeing the issue, I re-shot next day same time with 24P 1/60 and ND filter and lower iris. The problem was better, but still had some vertical smear.

I shot a third scene using F1 (interlaced) mode and higher shutter 1/125 with f11 and the issue was well corrected.

The issue seems more prone to Progressive mode than not. A good DVX scene guide is free which has some helpful hints. http://www.temple.edu/fma/referencelibrary/manuals/FouldDVX100menu.pdf

Barry Green's book also is exceptional reading- Highly recommend if you plan on keeping your dvx into the foreseeable future.

Reds and blues tend to smear like this. It's a known issue with the DV codec. You can try fixing it in post with a chroma blur (in Vegas, not sure about other NLEs). Try posting in the appropriate NLE forum. You can also try reducing the chroma levels in camera.
