VENICE: Top Gun 2 shot on the SONY VENICE (Claudio Miranda) (a few questions)

When I first worked in consumer retail in 1986, the Top Gun was the hottest video to demo for home theater systems because of its Surround Sound. Someone'd come in, you'd put the surround speakers behind them, see them duck from the woosh overhead.

I remember a salesman at a theater store in chicago did that to me in 2000 with The matrix. Prob the first memory I have hearing surround outside of a theater, so cool! Now i have The Matrix in 4K with surround and can replay the memory with even better PQ :b. Nothing beat seeing The Matrix in the theater in 99.. remember it vividly.. was unlike anything i had ever seen. ahh when 35mm was still king in cinemas

While not surround sound, I had a pair of hand-me-down floor speakers(Zenith/Allegro) from my parents and the stereo system(Zenith) for them that I took to college with me. I was watching Tombstone one night(Hi-Fi Stereo VHS) in my dorm room and in one of the early scenes when the train pulls into the station, the RA, which was my next door neighbor, comes flying out in the hall then goes outside, then comes back inside and starts looking around. There were a set of train tracks that ran through the middle of campus and right outside the building. They figured out that the sound was coming from my room and not an actual train outside. I was asked to turn it down to a reasonable volume, after that... ~24 years later, it still cracks me up thinking about that. And the system was probably at least 10 years old, at that point.

The theatrical release was in 1986, the laserdisc with multi channel not until 1995, so you might have been demo'ng the VHS HI-FI STEREO even without surround sound, it would make you duck for cover. I loved that movie and soundtrack.

They reprise the motorcycle scene chasing the FA-18 Super Hornet in the 2020 trailer. He pulls the tarp off the '84 Ninja 900 but speeding down the runway he is riding the supercharged 240 hp Ninja H2.

We have to wait until next summer to see this? Why so long!

I thought the trailer wasn't that great looking as to me at least images looked like pushed to much. But I'll buy it when it arrives a BR and judge for my self in 4k HDR.

pushed really? i thought it looked beautiful. what were you viewing the trailer on? both on my cinema display, 4K tv and Iphone X looked stunning.

Yea, I didn't think anything about the trailer was too mind-boggling (footage looks fine).

Mission Impossible was more jarring, IMO.

But that 1986 one is pretty lit for its time!

Yes. I got more jacked for the OG trailer. And I don't think it's just nostalgia. Watching it makes you wanna go jump into a jet-fighter.

Might have been VHS? I know it was VHS. Top Gun was also a 3-channel surround - left, right, rear. The Dolby ProLogic wasn't available at the "reasonable" consumer level for a couple more years. The first ProLogic receiver that was not in the astronomical price range was a Pioneer, which ran about $800. I remember George Kennedy calling in one day. On a hands-free speakerphone. I think I looked up when I heard, "This is George Kennedy. I am looking for a Pioneer ProLogic receiver. Do you have it in stock?" - "Not yet" - click.

BTW, another movie from that era that was a demo king was "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom". In the antidote action scene, the bottle is being kicked all over the floor and you could follow the sound pretty cleanly. A while after that, the "Empire of the Sun" on a laser disc was a nice attraction. And very young Christian Bale yelling, "P-51! The Cadillac of the sky!" as the Mustangs rip through the shot.

We also had "Howard the Duck" but we rarely played it. It did come in quite useful when Jeffrey Jones was trying to make a big deal out of himself.

The one thing I will say im getting tired off is hollywood rebooting everything. God forbid they reboot or remake any of John Hughes' films. I remember hearing them wanting to remake the great outdoors and weird science... also remember years ago them almost greenlighting a remake of ferris bueller where zac efron would be bueller.. happy that never happened. Can you imagine Back to the future being rebooted too?! If they want to capitalize off an idea that already made money, why not release the film back into theaters for like a 2 week run or something so people who didnt get the chance to experience the original film in the theater can? I know arthouse cinemas do this from time to time on midnight screenings and if you are lucky you can see it in 35mm. I've seen sixteen candles, the breakfast club, bueller, back to the future all in 35mm in the cinema as i was born in 1990 so i missed out on the 80s. Reminds me in 1997 when i was (like most 90s kids) obsessed with titanic and i saw it 13 times in the cinema.. the last screening i saw not 15min after the ship hit the iceburg the film print fell apart and scared the s*%t out of my 7 year old self lol.. it was funny hearing cameron knowledge that in the side by side documentary.

I had interesting exchanges in two different grocery stores - major chains - with the cashiers. One 20-YO lady was quite used to my regular shopping trips. The 17-YO in another location saw me for the first time. A subject of films came up due to the show-biz/ celeb gossip mags in the checkout line. Each young lady expressed the same sentiment - "I am not interested in watching any movie made before I was born".

And they were born around the turn of the millennium.

PS. I was not much different in my youth . I remember going to the first screening of "La Sortie de l'Usine Lumière à Lyon", thinking, "I am not interested in seeing any films made before it".

The old saying, "Those who forget history are doomed to repeat it" ties in here very appropriately. And as I type this, I get an update on my phone that 50 years ago, at this moment(4:17pm EDT), Man landed on the Moon.

Among other things.

A couple of months ago, I had a brief exchange with the security guard in the building, a cute 26-YO black female with braided hair. "Hey, I used to do have a fine do when I was young" - "Ya, like what?" - "I had a long mane like Robert Plant" - "Robert Plant? Who's that?" - "Ever heard of Led Zeppelin?" - "Uh, no".

Then she looked it up, "Siri, who's Robert Plant?"

Another bit - on YouTube, there are a bunch of car review channels (and camera review channels and toaster oven and smartphone review channels and so on). Stumbled onto a couple of Ford Mustang Bullitt reviews, "Ya, we don't know who Steve McQueen was and what the original movie was all about ..."

That's who "Yesterday" is for. Oh, so you don't know who the Beatles were? "Siri, who were Beatles?"

There’s a reason it’s called “popular culture”, it’s only cultural whilst it’s popular.

Then I must be a hipster of my generation because I hate most new stuff and love almost all old stuff. I think generations are just getting lazier and lazier.. i feel bad for anyone born 2000 onward.. the world was just handed to them via the internet and tech.. 90s was the last full decade of analog... happy i lived it.. wish i had more..

nah, it was the same way in the 1980's too. I was working at a video section of a large electronics store. "I am looking for a great romantic movie - Have you heard of "Casablanca"? - Nah-ah. When was it made? - 1941 - So, it's in black and white? - Yes, indeed - Uh, thanks but I think I'll pass. You have anything more recent? - Friday the 13th Part IV. It was made just last month - Oh, cool. I'll take it. -

Okay well ignorance toward film history has always been a thing (i dont understand why) but im saying the gen z or whatever they are called are lazier due to them always having tech and social media around them. You realize everyone born in the 20th century is out of high school now and near being out of college? The kid/teen landscape is owned by this century now and all of them have always known a world with WiFi, Social Media and the like.. human interaction is being cut short due to a swipe right or left.. they want more information faster without the need to talk to anyone.. technology is making us lazier.

Hahaha, when did this blog post go from Sony Venice to a bunch of crazy F35/65 and other nut jobs having a heart to heart discussion about movies. Gotta love DVX...

Anyway, I liked what I saw. I appreciate the non-CGI environment of the film. And I do think it'sstupid to ride a motorcycle without a helmet. Plus it's the most uncomfortable thing to do at anything more than 15mph.

I was a fan of Top Gun... and I think anyone who sees the movie, and you tell them it's a 2018 movie, would still like it. It's corny, but not more than Avengers. And hell, it's got some sweet action.

The industry is not just Hollywood... there is a lot lot lot lot more... If kids want it, they can see it. It's never been so accesible. I feel millennials are quite lucky, actually.

Now tell me Millenials haven't watched Star Wars Episode IV... yeah, thought so... crickets...
