Velcro-like Noise When Zooming Kit Lens

When I zoom in and out with my T2i kit lens -- slowly from 18 to 24mm and back -- there is an audible sound like velcro or crunching snow. What in God's name could be causing that? Any help much appreciated.

Oh, just googled T2i noise issue. This is different from the autofocus/motor noise. There's an odd tension in that area as well, so something it seems must be in there?

Without hearing it, I'd guess you got sand under the zoom ring. Or something else is in there. I'm not sure how to clean it out, but it'll wear at the material if that's it.

I would get it looked at by a repair facility.
It should not make noise.

Thanks. Guess I'll just send it back as it's band new. Yeah something is definitely in there. So weird.
