General Vegas Pro 8 and 7D/T2i footage

Hey guys I've never worked with footage from the 7D or T2i but I may be getting/shooting some footage shortly for a client project.

I have Vegas Pro 8 and After Effects CS4 as my two main working post production tools. What is my best codec/format to recode the native footage to in order to work with?

Whatever it is it has to be offered in one of these two tools. I don't have access to prores or anything like that.

Like I said it has to be a codec/format that already exists in one of the packages I have. I can't get the boss to throw down any more money at this point.

ahh gotcha. I'm not sure - if you do find out, please let us know, I'd be interested as well.

I'm a beginner really, so I don't know if I'm doing it the best way, but I use a program called MPEG Streamclip, to convert it to dnxhd. Both the program and the dnxhd codec are free from their respective websites.

I'm looking into using proxy files in vegas at the moment using a script called ProxyStream, which looks like it'll work well for me.http://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&so...GbeMaO-NzYByRBNdg&sig2=v6Qpe6CQ8SbLe1OEhRqQsA Anyone know if you can use proxy files with After Effects?

I use Vegas Pro 9, and After Effects CS3.

Thanks. I'm checking that out. I had never heard of DNxHD. I have it installed now and have rendered out a file using Vegas and that codec. Only problem is it still seems like a pretty large file. My two minute video is nearly 3GB's in size and the original m2t file (this is from an XHA1 camera) is only 373MB's.

Does that sound about right? Or does that still sound too big of a file? Sounds too big to me.

I tired the MPEG Stream but it wants me to uninstall quicktime and install quicktime alternative. I'm afraid to do that since I use quicktime all the time with my video work. I don't want to mess my machine up.

Trust me they are big files. I use Streamclip and DNxHD, I have never heard of it wanting to install the QT alternative.

What's the point then if they are such big files? I'm trying to save space, otherwise I'd just use uncompressed quicktime as my conversion choice. As far as I remember cineform makes files not much larger than the original out of camera files. Maybe I'm wrong though, we only used cineform for a short while as the demo came with Vegas.

I think I know why Mpeg Steamclip is asking for the Mpeg2 quicktime codec (and hence asking to reinstal quicktime), it's because the footage I was testing it with came from an XHA1 which is HDV which is Mpeg2 in nature.

I need to get my hands on some native (out of camera unmodified) 7D or T2i files.

I was under the impression you needed either Quicktime or the alternative. Works fine with QT for me, so never needed the alternative.

..and yeah the files are huge!

After converting the same clip to uncompressed quicktime I guess these DXnHD files really are a lot smaller.

Original M2T file: 373MB's
DXnHD file: 2.97GB's
Uncompressed quicktime file: 26.7GB's

Lol

Here I thought I was doing something wrong with the DNxHD conversion. Guess not. :)
