vegas 9 first looks

I've been editing a project yesterday and today with it t that is all stills and graphics. I'm also using Boris Red with it and it works great.

I ordered version 9 as soon as I saw the part about being able to use large stills (over 2K). I've done some test rendering already and it worked perfectly so far. Had one crash, but it was Boris that locked up while I was doing some weird stuff. Otherwise, the look of the interface is great and I've already put some of the new FX to use. The soft contrast filter is one you'll go to frequently and makes putting a nice vignette on stills really fast. The fill light filter is also first class. I've used similar effects in Boris, but I try to use the native Vegas effects where I can for speed and stability.

Worth the money? I can sometime edit for twelve hours a day. I'll take every bit of help I can get. Stability will be the key victory if it is able to render without locking up because of those unkown gremlins. By enabling large stills, that is a step in the right direction (and saves me time in Photoshop). I'll be editng some DVCPro HD tomorrow. Then I'll get a better feel for my average workflow.

Wow the new effects sound really great...especially the fill light filter!!what version of windows are you using?im really crossing my fingers that its more stable..can it render image sequences natively?
Pliz update us after trying DVCpro tomorrow.Thanx alot

I've played with v.9 briefly, mainly to try out the red compatibility.
I brought in a 4k .r3d clip, that I downloaded from redrelay.com.

The computer I'm running is a 2.67ghz i7 processor with 2gigs of ram a Geforce 9400gt and a raid 0 setup on windows vista 32bit

it was able to play back at full frame rate when I set the project up for 1080 24p and ran the preview window at preview one quarter.

I added a color curve and 2 secondary color corrections and it still played back at full frame rate. I was quite pleased with this as I will be shooting a couple of films on the RED camera this year and the directors might be cutting one or both of them in Vegas.

Thanx Jaket...4k?if it can handle that comfortably then it should be really awesome...seems i'll need to upgrade my comp before budgeting for it!!
Im also glad that from the way your describing it,seems more pro's will jump to vegas 9.Thats another thing i was hoping for.
thanx

Things I Like:

1. I love the ability to now stretch audio like u did with video on the time line.
2. Love the effects like the ray light and softening
3. I am so happy it can now import .MXF files... to bad i alrdy wasted $100 on the plugin

Things I don't Like:\

1. Need to reconfigure all of my settings...
2. I dont like the dark gray, any way to brighten the interface?

thome -

I only work on windows XP Professional. One of these days I"ll upgrade... But I just installed a new storage computer (eight 500 Gb drives and a Blu-Ray burner) and that's XP, too.

I've installed Vegas 9 on that computer (a dual ccore machine with integrated graphics and 2 gig mem) and have been editing Raylight 720p AVI's on it. Even with those lowly specs it seems to run well with the exception of running out of video memory. I hope to install a real graphics card shortly.

I'm anxious to try editing some Red files. Would like to get a Red at some point or be able to rent without also buying a whole new editing system. Very exciting stuff. I work with the whole Sony line of Vegas / Sound Forge / Cinescore / Acid Pro and really like the tight integration and common iterfaces between programs. And as for Boris Red (plus FX and Grafitti) I think sometimes they've gotten a bad rap from the prior version's interface. SInce 4.0 however, the program makes easy work out of complex titling and compositing right in Vegas or as a stand-alone program. It's not cheap, but it works well and really adds a lot of professionalism to corporate or broadcast projects. The program has the advantage of allowing intallation on multiple computers in an office and then rendering on a single license. It's only drawback working in Vegas is that Vegas only allows the program to pull a single frame from the timeline into the program (or two for a transition) but I've never found that to be a real issue. You can still cycle through the compostion in real or fast time by dragging the slider. And when you jump back to Vegas it plays without rendering so changes are quick as the program will re-load almost instantly.

Vegas 9 Panasonic DVCPROHD MXF support will be available around June 1st (with Raylight Ultra) from DVFilm for both 32-bit and 64-bit systems. AVC-Intra MXF support is coming around mid summer.

Just curious if anyone else can report on RED support. I am tempted to just shell out the $240 to download the upgrade. If the RED support is good, it's a game changer for me.

Anyone else have anything to report?

Why don't you just download the free Vegas Pro 9 30 day trial?

MVB, will Ultra work with the low end versions of Vegas - specifically Vegas Movie Studio 9 Platinum Edition? I am unfamiliar with Vegas but need to deliver DVCProHD (MXF files) to a new client. He is using this edition of Vegas. Thanks. pw

Thanks for that. I have been working with it and finding the same thing. It's as effortless and elegant as everything else in Vegas is. And access to the meta data right in Vegas is nice.

I have one project shot on RED already in FCP, but within the next few weeks, I am going to duel boot the mac(as it's the fastest machine I have) and try some real work work with vegas and RED (Short film first).

So far though, it looks mighty exciting.

On a Q9450 with 4 GB RAM, I get about 12 fps on 4K 24p .r3d files. That's at 1080p external display.

Which display quality? And is your project set to 4K?

On my laptop, a dual core with 2 gig RAM, a 4K project with 4K file gives me about 9. When I drop the project to 2K with the same file, and use draft, I get up to a wider range from about 10-14.

I've been used to switching between draft and full quality depending on what I'm working on in the moment. Are you in "best?"
