vegas 8 and camera quality

I get the feeling that I'm not getting the most out of vegas as I should be. I use a Canon GL2 and feel that my render settings aren't what they should be, because the quality comes out decent, but not as good as some videos I've seen. (I know it isn't the raw footage that is the problem).

If it is possible, could any of you tell me what render settings you use?

edit: Forgot to mention that I'm using vista 64bit ultimate. and my computer doesn't lack in any areas, very high-end.

Here are things that will determine quality of your video or footage:

Camera
Lighting
Method of capturing (USB, firewire)
Capturing Preferences
Output type/quality
Resolution
Monitor viewed on

I know.

I want to know what render settings you all are using.

What kind of skating are you shooting? (haha, sorry, the gl2 and vimeo gave me the impression that it's skating related).

Anyway, everything so far I agree with, and that a few more specificities would be helpful.
