VDSLRs out of reduser

I really need to stay off these forums after drinking some wine. My judgment and choice of words just may come back to haunt me some day. Hehe. Oh well I love a good haunt every now and then.

thing of it is, when the scarlet does come out.....who knows what else there'll be. nobody seen the rise of the hybrid dslr's/evil so i'm sure there's going to be another batch of surprises. i myself was amped about a 2/3 scarlet at the price point of 3k, but seen how much it was going to cost just to get it fully accessorized and lost interest. then the d90/gh1 came out and it suits me just fine. i'm a broke ass wanna be indie filmmaker.

I think regardless of what you end up using the most important thing is that there is quality gear at almost any price point. I spend a little over 1k on my GH1 and kit lens. You could spend about 2k and get a 7D with a decent lens. Spend 3k 5d etc etc. At any price point you have a camera that can get you a fantastic images out of it. That is the best part of all of this.

Oh wait I forgot to add that the winners of the past two DVXfests were GH1's with RED's in the running. ;)
I <3 GH1. Hehe okay I'll get my troll outta here. Bad troll, bad!

The last DVXfest winner was shot by Matty_G... oddly enough, he didn't enter QuestFest but the few fests BEFORE that were RED winners, which Matty_G also shot.

So, it's kind of against and with your point. Heeee~

Yep you are right Kholi. Shows you that it isn't the camera but the people behind it. :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

But it's very difficult to pull focus with because there's no way to attach an HD external monitor while recording.

I honestly used to think this about the GH1 but I spent the weekend pulling focus on a GH1 for a documentary shoot and I honestly did not have any trouble pulling focus on my 55mm f/1.2 - and I was constantly racking focus and refocusing on subjects...I really didn't have difficulty, but then I was also trained as a sports photographer and photojournalist so I'm very much used to fast focusing and refocusing and I wonder if maybe that is why I don't have too much trouble with it. I wish the focus assist worked while shooting, but still, I really didn't have any clips with soft focus and I was shooting at very wide open apertures with very little DOF, but to each his own, I just don't think it's *that* difficult.

Absolutely - I still think the GH1 is the best for making movies of the DSLR style cameras. I definitely preferred it over my friends 5D this weekend, although I liked his 24mm lens on the full frame for handheld footage...that was nice, but I still wouldn't trade - same goes for the 7D.

My feature production starts in just under a month, I absolutely cannot wait to shoot it with GH1s. With good shot design and proper handling in post, this camera rules.

We are off topic anyway, so can I ask does anyone know if there is a way to upscale the end product? Make it more than 1920x1080. Thanx

I don't understand the motivation of folks who claim to prize image quality over cost and/or convenience. What on Earth made you decide to abandon film?

Maybe the fact that is extremely expensive?

That is of course, relative. Red One is extremely expensive relative to a GH1. If IQ is important enough to make you choose Red over the GH1, why isn't it important enough to choose film over Red? I just don't get it...

I am a very happy GH1 shooter, doing a doc with it, but eagerly waiting for a RED scarlet. Why? Strange to say, but for me it is all about being able to work more effectively as a one (or two when I am lucky enough to have an audio person) band.

Yes, there is the advantage of onboard sound, but the Sony NXCAM and Pannie HMC150 have that at lesser price. And critical work on those cams seems to require a dual sound system, although the EX1 seems to ahve adecent rep. The betting is that the Scarlet sound will be very very good, especially when using the IO module.

No, it is two things that may be wrong but are motivating me.

One, shooting in RAW lets me do fine corrections after shooting and give me much more latitude when I am trying to do everything on a doc shoot. WB, exposure, and maybe even lighting are still very important but there is much more room for correction when I do not have to program the cam for the absolute best. When I am overloaded, as I always am, I am not as trapped into getting it perfect or missing the shot.

Two, RED is part of a system that I can expand to use things like the RedMotes to control the cam from a distance, allowing me to be where I need to be, and it feels like that is everywhere (I am in awe of ENG guys who do it all). I can use modules to enhance my data collection and make data wrangling a little easier. I can much more easily remotely view what I am shooting. The image is higher quality so I might be able to crop and do other post production stuff needed to cover up the fact that I was not on a multicam shoot.

Please, this is not a statement of fact, but an exposition of what is driving me toward RED. Workflow as well as image. EVIL cams have much more convoluted workflow, and on doc work I just do not have the time to do it all. And it seems like the RED system has shooting and editing advantages over both EVIL and HMC150 - EXR1 class cams. What do you think?

Another thing. When I look at the rig that Philip Bloom and the other EVIL greats use to make their still cams work for filming it seems like it is so expensive that it moves toward the RED scarlet range. Don't forget that most of us have many lenses and lens adapter,a long viewfinders, etc.

Okay well my point about RED losing out in the future is they will need to get a 4:4:4 chip set to compete. It's just the nature of the game. It's been done so now it is just a matter of time before that price drops to their price point and they are in trouble.
It's been done - by who?
I mean, 4:4:4 can be done with three chips, but if you do three chips you introduce a prism and lose the ability to use film lenses, so that's not gonna happen.

And yes, the F35 can deliver 4:4:4, but it takes 14 megapixels on the sensor to deliver a 1920x1080 image. So you have your choice -- 1920x1080 4:4:4, or 4K/5K/6K/whatever-K at 4:2:0.

When it comes to straight marketing, the bigger number is gonna win every time.

Honestly if I was in RED's shoes I would just drop the Scarlet and focus on getting that chip into the RED and just see where the new HDSLR market goes. They were too soon to announced with their product and it hurt them. They should look at Apple's strategy and keep that info on lock down. But they are a new company so I believe they will figure it out in the end.
Here I agree 110%. I don't understand where the 2/3" Scarlet is supposed to fit into the marketplace; I want an S35 Scarlet but frankly, I have a hard time understanding why anyone would buy an Epic or Red One vs. the S35 Scarlet, so it seems to me like they're managing to turn their $17,500 customer into a $7,500 customer.

The fun thing is, they're run by a billionaire marketing genius, so there's definitely some method behind what we're perceiving as madness, so I look forward to seeing how this all actually plays out. It doesn't seem to make a lot of sense right now, but -- let's wait to see what the "ground truth" is, because it may turn out that there's some compelling reasons we're not seeing.

So I predict the HDSLRs will grow into a new breed of cameras that will pretty much blow Scarlet out of the water until they do some drastic changes. The HDSLR may not be where it is at right now in this moment but it will form a new breed of HD cameras.
I agree and disagree. I think the PRICE POINT of the HDSLR, and its compromises, have indeed created a new breed. I just don't think the DSLR form factor is conducive to shooting video, so I expect that as long as folks don't have any other choice, the DSLR will remain king of the budget realm, but as soon as a valid alternative appears (meaning, an actual designed-for-video camera with the DSLR's large sensor, interchangeable lens, and price point) then I think you're gonna see the DSLR become an asterisk in the history of video cameradom.

So grabbing an HDSLR is just as good as somebody grabbing a RED as long as they are moving cinema forward.
Depending on the type of project they're doing, I would agree completely.

They take pretty spiffy still photos... And that's pretty much how I expect to use my 7D. I'll use it for video to supplement the EX1 and DVX, and when that get's trumped by whatever is coming down the pike... I'll have a nice SLR to take pics with.

That is of course, relative. Red One is extremely expensive relative to a GH1.
It's not relative at all. To just buy enough film, without renting a camera, without having ANYTHING else such as microphones etc. and without developing, scanning and so on, you pay enough money to buy the GH1.
