VDSLR for more than run-and-gun/music videos/small time?

...
why is that funny? i mean really? doesn't it depend on the project and not the director or the budget? btw why did you pick those two? they are two of the very directors i can totally see with a gh1.

Peter Jackson made "Lord of the Rings" and Ridley Scott is one of my favorites. And yes you´re right, it doesn´t depend on the director or the budget but I can´t imagine that these two e.g. would do it. In these projects is so much money why the heck they should use Gh1s with all the limitations and small quality (17mbps...) comparing to professional 35mmm?

But of course an indie guy with low budget is able to shoot an epic stuff, why not with a D90. Hey matt - why not with your mobile phone in 640x480, blow the stuff up and you´ll get a really nice noisy filmic look (sorry, today is April fools day). Ok seriously, what do you guess has an indie to spend for a real good epic movie at least? 30.000,-? 60.000,-? I don´t know - but sorry, the whole discussion is a little bit moony in my humble opinion but nice to read...

what he's saying is they are craftsmen and craftsmen can make something good with whatever tools they have at hand

before LOTR Peter Jackson was just another indie director like us.......I suspect he still is.

An epic on 60k....I'm pretty good at doing things on the cheap but I don't think I could do an epic that cheap....urban drama sure. The CGI for the opening scene of my epic is gonna cost at least 20k.

haven't you seen bad taste?

Ok - you won. But that was before he became famous. And it´s not an epic. I didnt watch it cause I don´t like this kind of stuff. If 60k are not enough for an epic what do you guess the whole movie gonna cost about at least?

So, the most important question from Kholi was:

So the question isn't COULD you, but WOULD you? ...

Sure, you could but would you really? Lets say the estimated costs are around 200.000,- bucks. What a cost risk! What´s the goal that you want to reach? Definitely success. Let´s face it - who would really use such limited cams as an D90 (overheating, bad compression, stairsteps...) a 5DII (30p, "Toothpaste-CSI Miami-Look", H264...) both no manual control. Or this tiny-weeny thing GH1 (17mbps, too small for good handling, adapter...)? The danger not to get really acceptable material would be too high for me. Personally I´d prefer better professional cameras. But each his own...

I've said I will use a DFSLR that I expect to be available in 12 months. Something like a D800, full frame, decent codec, manual controls. No way would I try and shoot an "epic" with the current crop. If I was shooting it now I'd go with a red but i think in a year a $3000 DFSLR will do quite nicely.
