AC90: Varizoom VZROCKPZFI seems to be compatible with the AC90

I just got my AC90 in the mail today and I was sure happy to find out my DVX100B batteries fit the camera and as a added bonus my VXROCKPZFI works as well. When I talked to one of the big NY camera stores, the wonderful tech side could not find any support for a iris, focus, zoom and record controller but they did have a zoom controller. Granted I have only used this combination for a minute and I will get back to the forum with more information if there are any negative changes but this may be a good time to dig out your old controller and chime in! I have a three hour event on stationary tripod position only and I really did not want any camera shake from the me trying to locate the on camera zoom rocker in the dark.

I am looking forward to reading Barry's book as soon as it arrives but I may need to hit the forum up with a few technical questions in the next day or two.

Overall the camera seems really nice for my under $2,000.00 budget. I am really curious how the facial recognition will do on stage and the OIS under changing stage light color changes, spot lighted solos and focus while slow zooming. I am not much of a "automatic adjustment" trusting person. Most of my shoots are light temperature selected since I do a lot of stage light. I worry that in the future we will see a mix of LED and tungsten lighting. Not sure what will happen then.

Heres hoping to a great new HD camera!

Excellent price! I bought mine a while ago and I am happy to just have it for these next few weekends. I will look into it. Started reading your notes but the wife just got in from work ... time to go into husband mode!

I bought the Studio-1-Productions zoom controller for my AC90 on the recommendation and welcome review by kwkeirstead. Very pleased with this controller. Paid $99 when Studio-1 had a special price in March or April. Quite a bargain price!

Yep, I noticed it is actually $119.00 today. I am not sure if I have any reason to switch as of yet. The Varizoom has been a good one for me and I like the focus knob with the marking area. Anyone know if the AC90 is Parafocal or not?

Studio 1 and Varizoom

Studio 1 and Varizoom

Just placed an order for the VZ-ROCK-PZFI controller...a used unit from B&HPhoto. I also have the Studio 1 controller, and a Libec Zoom Controller. A bit overboard, but there was a progression. I started with the Studio 1 controller, but as stated in another post, I found it awkward using the Zoom dial for videotaping sports. So I purchased a Libec ZC-3DV and used that successfully with my camera crane and tripod mounted camera for videotaping sports. But there have been a few times when I would have like to have had focus or iris control ... so I've been watching the ROCK-PZFI, hoping to find a sale. And finally I came across the used controller for $189 at B&HPhoto...so just placed the order. I suspect the Libec unit will be up for sale soon...but I believe I will be keeping both the Studio 1 and the VariZoom controllers in my toolkit. The Studio 1's ability to set and maintain a constant zoom speed, and smooth ease-in and -out for zooms is quite valuable with landscape videography or for use on set. But for sports the rocker control of the VariZoom is unbeatable for adjusting the view, and it will be great to be able to occasionally go manual for focus and/or iris during fast-moving sports or other event videography. Vive la différence..!
