Variable built in ND filter!

Imagine a dial (wheel) on the side of the camera that you can use to adjust the internal *variable* ND filter from 2-8 or even 2-10 stops, fast and accurate.

This can be made with two polarizers like the Singh Ray ND filter. If you put it internally, you can use linear polarizers instead of circular for better contrast and image quality because each one has only one layer instead of two. Also, internally there will be no dust or flare and the filter will be very small and economic with a thin glass e.g 0.2mm to maximize quality. Of course, it should be on/off switchable.

For most situations 8 stops are more than enough (=1/256 or 0.4%) so a single high-quality variable filter could be used for maximum usability!

Optionally:
If combined with one standard ND of 6 stops you can cover a range of 2-14 stops, variable from 2-8 and 8-14* !

*14 stops = 1/2^14 = 1/16384 = 0.006% of the input light! More than enough for ANY use!
