V3.0.1 send your fs700 back again

Well. I dropped mine off this morning. I can tell you why they won't be allowing end users to do this one. The firmware update process in its current state is ridiculously complicated. We are talking hardware dongles, two way keys specific to the update, vbs scripts to update and check programs, downloads, special usb modes, updater programs over usb.
I don't envy any sony tech who has to do this update and chance bricking your camera.
Maybe its something about what has to be updated (eg maybe fpga) they've only just developed the interface to talk to. Maybe its always this complicated for a non end user firmware update. Don't know.

Of course I could follow the ball and get it done. Would I trust end users not to brick their cameras with the current process enmasse and then demand sony unbrick them before their next shoot. nup.

So anyway, few issues in that process, have not got mine back yet. Was offered to take it home today, said that's fine, just left it there. This is definitely a one day max type turnaround though for service centres where you catch their workload being ok, its usb and complicated but not a long process. So long as they either do it often (and this is normal for a big city repaird centre) or have an IT wiz to get all the bits updated ready to hit go, then their might be delays.

Whatever the situation that got it here, sony is getting the update out fast, offering shipping, and with their current process, it will not be consumer. So get ready to send it back. :)

Just got reply from Sony Center in LA. Seems i'm a lucky one and have my camera upgraded to 3.0.1 instead of 3.0

Still didn't picked it up as i'm on holidays.

Hope they will offer a shipping for you guys!

Well got mine back. 3.01. Just in time for a music video steadicam this weekend where I have to match an f3 with profiles.

I'm sure the main service centres have this down. If you are using a regional one (will only be an option if you are already at 3.0 as they don't need to use the jig), then they have to run the vbscript to put it into update mode as well as the version check script. Just saying. Very complex update process for anyone who is not used to it.

NJ facility played stupid when I asked. I sent in the PDF you had. Let's hope they don't send my camera back with 3.0

"3. Do not customize PP6 and PP7 and use it as it is (meaning at default setting of
PP6/PP7)"

For v 3.0 firmware users, does this mean only use PP6 and PP7 in default mode even if
no v2.0 profile was ever loaded into PP6 or PP7?

[Symptoms]

1. If a “Camera Profile” data
stored using the camcorder using a Ver.2.00
or earlier
version
is used in a camcorder using a Ver.3.00 firmware
symptoms below will
occur.
- Setting screen will not be shown properly in 4K super slow motion/2K super slow
motion modes.
- The camcorder might mal
function when setting the 4K super slow motion/2K
super slow motion modes.
2. “Camera Profile” data stored onto a memory card using a Ver.3.00 camcorder will
have some error in the “KNEE AUTOSET SENSITIVITY” parameters in PP6 and
PP7.

[How to avoid the sym
ptoms before applying the latest firmware]

1. Do not read any “Camera Profile” data, which was stored using Ver.2.00 or
earlier
,
into the camcorder with Ver.3.00. If you already have, do not use the 4K super slow
motion/2K super slow motion mode.
2. Create anoth
er “Camera Profile” data using the Ver.3.00 firmware.
3. Do not customize PP6 and PP7 and use it as it is (meaning at default setting of
PP6/PP7)

as far as I understand it means:
1) do not touch settings of PP6 and PP7
2) do not load stored profiles from version 2.0 or earlier to any profile

mine came back today for the second time
(shipping from Germany to UK and back)

I've done both verboten actions, and, so far, the world hasn't stopped. Has anyone had some REAL problems? This may be a random or camera specific failure mode.

Well I just got off the phone with Sony support and they told me PP6 and PP7 can cause problems if the defaults are changed even without loading a v 2.0 PP. He didn't say specifically what problems. He said PP1 thru 5 are fine to change with v3.0.

I have v3.0 and I changed the gamma settings on PP6 and PP7 but I'm not receiving any errors and raw functions appear to be working normally, does this effect all cameras or just some?

"does this effect all cameras or just some?"

I don't know. I was using modified PP6 and PP7 with no visible problems. To be safe, I'm not going to modify PP6 and PP7 until I have a change to send it in for v3.01. I only use 2 different custom profiles so it really is no problem for me.

I would not use modified PP6 and PP7 for paid work. You just don't know what can happen.

So I was in the Valley 2 days ago going to Film Tools in Burbank. I had my FS700 with me and I realized I was near the Sony Service Center. So I went in and asked about the v3.01 update. The guy took my camera and told me to come back in a few hours. So I went to do my errands, had a cup of coffee with a friend and my camera was ready in 3 hours!

Sucks that most people have to send it back, but at least it's an easy fix.

That's great. I do have to say though, I am pretty happy with Sony's service on this. They sent me a prepaid label and it was only out of my hands for two full days. That's sending it from Minneapolis to New Jersey and back.

I've sent multiple emails to the Sony Service Center in LA. They, once, a month ago, asked for my serial number, but otherwise, I've had absolutely NO correspondence from them on this issue. My FS700 is working normally, including after I made changed to PP6 and PP7.

I had mine picked up on a Thursday two week's ago. Was a bit apprehensive as the day I sent it off I had a call to do a job a week later and I needed the camera for it, so I phoned the Service centre to explain. It then arrived back at my home on the following Tuesday - very quick, they only had it 2 working days! Firmware 3.01. Still haven't been brave enough to shoot with SLOG2, I think I'll leave it until I eventually get the Q7 next year.

You have to find the right contact which is really frustrating. I tried to call first but was given the run-around by a clueless rep. After going nowhere for 10 minutes, I found out he was at a call center in the Philippines when I thought I was talking to LA service center the whole time.

So I just walked in since I couldn't get through. But I know most people don't have that luxury.

That's exactly the same non-response I've been getting :furious3:

I know what kind of problem is it.. as I've got it, after update to firmware 3.0 and was trying to shoot at B&H store, using they Interface Unit and RAW recorder: image getting distorted, with a lot of vertical color stripes and when I torn to 4K 120 fps camera freezing .. and finally recorder stop to work too, says something about "data corrupted" .. everything go away after update to 3.01 and working fine! ...
And I have to tell you something: there no any "days" and even "hours" for update.. actually it's take about 15-25 minutes ... :)

FS-700-4K-update.jpg

as you see, they connect camera and flush firmware inside using small additional board and special cables ...

Sony FS700R and Sony FS700RH will have this from start, and no more paid upgrade for 4K RAW! :)
