V3.0.1 send your fs700 back again

has anybody else already a confirmation? Sounds pretty bad! Fortunately I did not change PP6 or PP7 up to now, but is was just by chance due to lack of time to play with it..

edit:
I asked Sony European Central Helpdesk by mail and they confirmed this issue. You have to bring or ship your camera to a service center.

Oops (to the QA dept). I'd read somewhere (but can't remember where) that this point upgrade could be installed without sending it back. AFAIK the sending back part changed the FGPA firmware which may not need changing in this case. Has anyone else read that?

cheers

:furious3:

I sure hope we can do this without sending back. Last time cost me $75 shipping and insurance and I was out a camera for 10 days. Don't mind that when it's my choice to upgrade, not so much when they drop the ball.

Arrrrg!

1. If a “Camera Profile” data
stored using the camcorder using a Ver.2.00
or earlier
version
is used in a camcorder using a Ver.3.00 firmware
symptoms below will
occur.
- Setting screen will not be shown properly in 4K super slow motion/2K super slow
motion modes.
- The camcorder might mal
function when setting the 4K super slow motion/2K
super slow motion modes.
2. “Camera Profile” data stored onto a memory card using a Ver.3.00 camcorder will
have some error in the “KNEE AUTOSET SENSITIVITY” parameters in PP6 and
PP7.

I find that interesting because when I got my Camera back from Sony LA for the Hardware / Firmware upgrade, my camera had been set to default and all my previous picture profiles had been wiped clean. Also, I never use PPs stored on my SDHC cards, so I guess technically this wouldn't effect me.

But yeah, enough of this bringing it back to the factory for a
firmware upgrade deal. This is 2013, let non-hardware upgrades be downloadable.

While you're at it Sony, can you PLEASE update the annoying ISO function so it can be changed on the wheel and also a 180 degree shutter lock would be really nice when switching btw. frame rates. Those 2 things are super annoying on the FS700. Besides that, the camera is awesome.

This is just unacceptable. if this is real, and Sony refuses to cover the costs, I smell a class action lawsuit in the air.

Wow. They're really taking the piss with that one. Seriously. I can understand sending it in for the paid upgrade (since it actually seemed to involve some hardware tinkering) but they can honestly go f@@ck themselves if they think it's acceptable to ask anyone to send back a camera for a second time (given it took me 2 weeks to get my camera upgraded last time) just so they can protect their IP after they screwed up.

I mean. Jesus wept, what's wrong with them? V2.0 was downloadable. And there is nothing stopping them from writing a bit of code that means the firmware update won't run unless v3.0 is already installed, right?

I think Sony need to have a few words with Convergent Design about customer service!

Well sony ap offered to pay for my shipping if I sent it to Sydney. They confirmed "no dismantling necessary", so ill actually just take it to the local centre.
everyones mileage may vary with their service centres.

the big cost for me the first time was insurance. I guess if you have a product business your shipping insurance for goods is probably covered especially when shipped in "original packaging".

but mine was a percentage and added up to hundreds of dollars based on the value.

If I was going to send it to Sydney, I'd try and use a pickup service by sonys courier, as then the costs would be lower if they were paying shipping.

anyway in this case, I can literally take it about 10kms, so this is now a pain, but not a big deal.

id still rather be trusted to do a download ala 2.0. But who knows, maybe a new update process unlocked in the fpga after the 3.0 process that is no where near consumer ready or ip protected.

i don't know but somehow I doubt they are just putting it on an sd card and hitting go. Who knows.

They've done the right thing letting people know so they can work around.

wasnt there a premier bug in the last month that meant you would lose your multicam edits without realising? Ouch. Think they are going to be able to pull the edits back retrospectively .

I also think my profiles were wiped clean and I don't store them on SD cards. Does this mean I'm not effected?

personally, Sony needs to cover two-way shipping. It's bad enough we have to be without our cameras a second time.

Wow, pretty bad news!

I just received e-mail today that upgrade of my camera to firmware 3.0 is DONE. (In L.A.) But in this situation I'm going to ask them to upgrade it to 3.0.1 before i pick up the camera from them.
Hopefully they will respond tomorrow.

Yes, it is a back to base change so must be more than just the basic firmware. I think you'd all need to talk to your sony prime support to arrange things accordingly. I've just been called back by them. You've gotta feel for sony though. Yes, you can argue that it's a bit of a cock up but it wasn't intentional. And bugs happen, and ironically the pressure of getting the upgrades out probably cut QA time down... There's some irony in there somewhere...

cheers

yes, bugs happen. Having sent back the BMPCC last Monday and sending the FS700 tomorrow means I have to shoot with my 5DM3 or pay for a rent next week. :-/

Wow. I can understand sending it in for the paid upgrade (since it actually seemed to involve some hardware tinkering)
There is NO any "hardware tinkering" at all! it's ONLY a very complicated software update, and Sony just do not want to deal with many "DEAD" FS-700 cameras if they give this firmware file for us to do it, and many FS-700 owners do it WRONG.. ... ....soon, probably in Jan 2014, "NEW" FS-700R will have this update ready installed, and Sony service Centers will relax a little :)
( ..and .. - don't ask me how do I know it, please.. :) )

Complicated or not, I can imagine that they don't want to give this deep look into the camera out of their hands (with best regards to Mr. Kiselev ;)
