using the dvx100b for first time

Hi to all

Anyone who knows the cam and would care to help,,, thnx in advance

I'm so green the many settings are too overwhelming to go it alone,,, my interest is to produce personal works that have the look and feel of film, hence the dvx cam ( although I may tradeup for xl2 ,,, opinions welcome ),,, with just the cam and no fancy lights or additional mics I envision documentary like material, using pet - family - freinds - whatever vistas are along the road - our local lakes and whatever else strikes me for footage, I will narrarate a waveform, and include soft music as workaround for lack of audio gear. This much I can do via Final Cut....

So,,, that said

Hope that description is good enough,,, What I'm hoping to get from members here is sort of a mission or assignment focused on the 'cam settings' and what these setting SHOULD produce Vissually Speaking.

From reading what Ihave thus far, I know that 24P is what I need to get the 'film look',,,, 24P advanced I understand has to do with 'pulldown' cadence but since I'm going straight to dvd will any of that matter??

also

I understand 24P is not true 24fps ,,,according to one expert ,,, it's really 29.97 with 2.3.2.3 pulldown (2,3,3,2, for the dvx) with droped frames in post for a resulting 24fps,,, NOW, although I can understand what that all means I really don't know what it means to me, or rather, how to capitalize on this bit of info. That said,, could I achieve film look shooting 30 fps altogether...

Any how, I know I could just ramble on but will quickly aske tooo many stuupid questions for lack of knowledge, a hoping there is a mentor among you who might get me going while I pick out a good book ...

thnx
joe

Hi, the camera might seem a bit overwhelming at first. If you are unsure of what any of the buttons or features do, read the manual that came with the camera. I'm pretty sure you can download it off of Panny's website if you don't have the original. You should get the DVX book in the mail when you register your camera.

I wasn't sure what to do at first when it came in, it definitely wasn't my grandpa's camera. The manual is good.

the manual is borderline OK for me as this is my first cam ever
but I did find a tread right here after the fact that really has the NuBee springboard I needed ..

thanx for your response, your advice is fine just the the manual, I feel lacks a bit for me.

No problem, this website is full of good information for everyone. The Dvx100B is your first camera ever? Nice, you got a good one!

I'm in the same boat as you - the DVX is my first camera, I don't have the DVX book (yet!) but I've spent aaaages trawling through these forums and am picking up valuable knowledge left, right and centre :)

The manual isn't as comprehensive as it could be - but once you get in and start messing around, you'll find it invaluable!

The only piece of advice that I can offer (as a newie to all this) is experiment heaps!
Film anything and everything, tweak settings, alter your lighting setups etc, even burn footage to DVD
You can mess with in-camera "looks", find out if you'd rather shoot flat and adjust colours in post, experiment with depth of field - that kind of thing

It'll give you a great handle on what works (and what doesn't) and you'll get a good idea of what you like.

Uh, no. 24p is recorded at a true 24 frames per second, pull down is added afterwards simply so it can be recorded to tape in the mini DV format. pulldown is added simply for storage reasons.

the DVX can use either 2.3.2.3 or 2.3.3.2(AKA advanced) pulldown, depending on if you plan on a film out. but, most importantly, it records a true 24 fps at the CCDs, just like a film camera.

some cameras(the sony fx-1, for example) have a fake 24 fps imitation that drops frames. (sony calls theirs 'cineframe') but the DVX has true 24fps goodness.

eta: would you mind naming this 'expert'? it's also possible you might have misunderstood him/her.

got you note master p ----thnx,,, will play

I'm betting your right anchor y ,,, and I'll stand corrected cause although source is expert , he was not focused on dvx cam, was tutorial on final cut...

thnx guys

It sounds like you might have misunderstood him/her. Yes the footage is captured into the editing station at 29.97, but using advanced pulldown(2.3.3.2) you can remove the duplicated frames and edit the footage in it's original 24fps format, or just shoot using normal pulldown(2.3.2.3) and edit it in 29.97.

pulldown is only added for storage on miniDV tape, and the 2 pulldown patterns are simply to give you a choice between editing on a 23.98 or 29.97 timeline in post.
