Using the dvx100b as a player

Hi everyone

Is there any harm in using the dvx100b to transfer to DVD or to copy to my hard drive? The least expensive player I found is the JVC SR-VS30U for $799.00

harm in that you add lots of hours to your heads, which devalues the cam and doesn't help with longevity. buy a cheap mini-dv cam from best buy for $199 to use as a deck, any one will work...always seemed silly to me for people to buy $1000 dv decks for capturing when a cheapo minidv cam works just as well...

Hi Guys;

If I capture in 24p will the cheep camera affect the footage in any way.
meaning will the footage still be in 24p eventhough the cheep camera cannot capture in 24p

Yes it will still be 24p. The DVX lays the 24p to tape as a specially flagged 60i file. The cheap camera will transfer that file just fine. You'll be able to edit the footage as 24p from there if your NLE has that capability (don't almost all of them?).

How about free-run timecode (NOT record-run). Will that passthrough the cheapo cam too?

Timecode, just like everything else, is recorded when you shoot, and is not effected by the playback deck when using firewire.
