Using step down ring for 52mm fader nd on 55mm zeiss planar?

I've been using a 52mm fader nd on my 49mm filter thread super takumars but I'm considering a contax zeiss planar 50/1.7 T* with a 55mm filter thread. I wouldve bought a larger thread on the fader but budget was main issue as all my lenses have 49mm-52mm threads.

I'm using a canon t2i 550d, so what I'm wondering is with the crop factor, if I use a 55mm to 52mm step down ring for the fader will I see any vignetting or will it be ok? I don't have the zeiss yet, but this is one of the factors involved in my decision making.

Also do I part with my tak 50/1.4 and replace with zeiss planar 50/1.7? I'm not looking for a discussion on the two lenses but if you could reply with either tak or zeiss, I'd be interested to know. Same reason as above, need the money. Would like to have both but if I had to chose which should I go with.

Hard to say if you'll see any viginetting with the small sensor. Any chance you can take some test photos with the lens before committing to buy it? Unless someone else here has experience with this, I'd say that's the only way to know for certain.

Unfortunately I won't be able to get my hands on the lens before I buy it. Cost wise, I can get that zeiss for $125

It's hard to definitive about this without actually trying it - but before I had a matte box and filters, i did the smaller-filter deal regularly, with no problems.

55 to 52 is most likely well out of the crop factor. If you're unsure still, take a black card and slide it across your current lens, in bright light, (and if possible) with the DOF stopped down. See how many millimeters you can cover before it's visible in the frame. This will give you a rough idea of how much crop you have.

My "guess" is you'll be fine. If the lens is a killer deal, consider buying it - do you really use the fader on every shot??
