Using SLR lenses on Red Camera

Canon EOS lense are not a good match for RED because of their all electronic interface. And there will not be an EOS mount for RED anyway.
The 17-35mm Nikkor is just simply an amazing piece of optical engineering.
I have the D2x and have blown images up from that lens to 2x4 feet. There is no doubt 4k images from that lens will hold up to Grummans Chinese size projections.
E.

A cheper option is the Fixed 28mm f2.8 AIS Nikkor, also a stellar performer, better than the Zeiss!

I have been keen to test out Nikon 28-70mm f/2.8 ED-IF, having read some good reviews. Does anyone know if this would be a good zoom to compliment the 17-35 f2.8?

:dankk2:

It is ver sharp but a slight vari-focal design, which means the focus shifts slightly when zoomed. You could certailny shoot with it but I would use it as a variable prime not a true zoom.

evinsky,

does nikkon make a lense similar in quality to the nikkor 17-35 but with a wider zoom range? (They have a 24-120 that is a bit slower, but does it hold up?)

I have a 24-120 that I bought for my wife when our daughter was born 8 years ago. The range is great but not very sharp, maybe the newer ones are better now.

Nikon 18-200mm

Nikon 18-200mm

I just want to preface by saying that i'm still learning the ropes on what to look for with lenses for the Red cam. Anyhow I did some searches about week ago and saw quite a bit of stuff mentioned in the Red forum on this lense leading up to it's release (Nikon 18-200mm see here for review ://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/18200.htm) but have not really seen anyone mention it as a viable still lense alternative for Red since it has come out. Does anyone have any experience with this lense...any feedback on it? Seems like it would be an ideal lense if you have to go with still lenses to begin with. Also would it work with the Redrock Micro ff?

thanks in advance,
Omar

It's a DX lens. I believe there isn't manual aperture control ring, isn't it?

Yeah you're absolutely right...i just did a little reading on it. Glad I asked...like I said I'm still kind of learning the ropes...before yesterday i'd never even looked into a still lens. the next few months will be kind of like a crash course.

thanks,
Omar

You really can't go wrong with the old manual Nikon lenses. they are the bargain way to go if you can't afford a set of overpriced cine primes.

Everyone should keep in mind that RED has not said the Nikon and Canon lens mounts will be available immediately. I asked Ted about this on Wednesday at NAB, and while he didn't say anything definite, my impression was that it would be wise to have alternate plans.

Of course, we don't know what RED's manufacturing schedule looks like. It's possible if you've got a higher reservation number (we're 404), maybe the photo lens mounts will be out by the time you get your camera. While I totally understand the reasons RED isn't committing to specific dates right now, I do hope these things are locked down by the time the first cameras start shipping so people can plan a little better.

It is a solid concern but considering the late 2007 RED zoom delivery, I'd like to believe Jim can't give us these mounts when they won't be so relevant like they will since the first second of the RED ONE delivery. That is next March/April (maybe?) -- I am also requesting!

Canon, Nikon mount ...

Canon, Nikon mount ...

For those of you with Canon kit & glass contemplating 'going back' to Nikon (to then use the Nikkor glass on the Red One), there is an alternative. The Canon body has shallower lens mount plane to sensor than the Nikon body equivalent, so you can adapt a Nikkor to work on Canon bodies (and reach infinity) - there are plenty of Nikon F to Canon body adapters ... you can start by looking on eBay (do a search for something like [nikon to canon adapter]).
I've been using Nikkor AF / manual glass on Canon 1Ds fine (and yes, the 17-35/2.8 is streets ahead of the Canon equivalents).
I dont know much about the Nikkor DX range ... there appear to be some nice lenses (I guess it's also optimised for a chip size approx the same size as the Red One), but I'm not sure how one can control the aperture.
By the way, the Canons will also accept other lenses (via adapters), Contax, Zeiss, Olympus, Leica, Hasseblad, Mamiya 645, etc ...

For those who wish to use EOS lenses (manually on other kit, be it on bellows or the Red One), the following link may be of interest, as it discusses how to set the aperture on EOS lenses http://photonotes.org/articles/eos-manual-lenses/

As for the Red One, I'd love to see the availability of a Canon mount (soon PLEASE !?*) ... going down the Canon route, all sort of lenses can be adapted (as outlined above) offering a huge choice.
Then again, I'd be happy with a Nikkor mount too

I'm sure the Red Team have more important things to sort out at the moment, but, given their 'modular and upgradeable' approach, I'm sure non PL glass will be accomodated in due course.

As for the Red One ... roll on 2007

Again, there will be a Canon FD mount, and most prime Eos lenses were derived from this manual focus line. But unless Canon desides to donate a licence for thier mount & electronic lens interface to Red I would not count on an Eos mount at all. however even a moderately talented machinest could mill you one in a day.

I just sent in my reservation. Now I have a question about SLR lenses. I dont own either nikon or canon glass and I was looking for input on which lenses would work best with Red1 and what might be a few good choices.

thanks for any input--

I'm a big Canon fan for SLR bodies, but if you're only interested in lenses, Nikon has the edge right now. This is particularly true for RED, where you won't be able to use lenses that don't have manual aperture rings. Nikon offers a better range of lenses meeting that requirement.

That does help me out. Thanks. So I found this lens for sale on buydig.com for around $1400. This seems to be the going price. If anybody knows, could they point out why this particular lens costs so much compared to some of the other Nikons at the $1200 or $1000 price range. Is it just superior optics?

The 17-35 Nikon is indeed VERY sharp and contrasty ............ when stopped down! If you can live with > F6 then this is a great lens.

If you need/want apertures closer to F2.8 (in a wide zoom) then the Nikon 17-55 is the better bet. This has been conclusively demonstrated by many expert photogs.

BTW, I owned the 17-35 and found it was superb for landscape use.............. i.e. slightly stopped down.

Regards
JohnG

Thanks JohnG,

Unfortunately the 17-55mm is a DX lens, so no aperture control putting it out of consideration for the Red.

A shame really. If not for that annoying problem, the still lens options would greatly expand.
