Using P2 cards with PC laptop

I have a question for all of you P2 card users... Would I be able to use a PC laptop equipped with a PCMCIA card port, to transfer all of my clips from the P2 card onto my internal or external hard drive?

Thanks guys and gals!

Also check out P2 Genie ( http://www.p2genie.com/ ) It will make your workflow a little easier and it allows you to select a 2nd Destination (such as an external hard drive) to dump your footage to.

btw - if you are looking for an external hard drive. Check out the Seagate FreeAgent Go 160GB USB 2.0 External Hard Drive (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148258) .. I picked one up last week at Fry's for only $99! This drive is powered directly from your USB port, so you don't need to lug around a external power supply.. Great for dumping footage in the field.

What if you edit on mac? You take the harddrive off your pc (where you download your p2's in the field) and put it on your mac.

I have had numerous issues plugging in hard drives between pc and mac.

You have three options:
  1. Use the FAT32 file system on the hard drive. It's the same file system as is used by the P2 cards, and can be read and written on both the Mac and PC without extra software.
  2. Use NTFS. It can be written on the PC, and it can only be read on the Mac. That may not be a bad thing, however.
  3. Use HPFS+ using MacDrive, a program that allows the PC to read and write Mac-formatted drives. I haven't used the program myself, but I've heard of compatibility issues with some programs like DV Rack (crashes when the File Open / File Save dialog is displayed).

P2 viewer will not let you look at P2 contents from a MAc drive
mounted on a PC using MacDrive. I just tried it yesterday.
We could mount the GRaid and see the folders but could not
view with P2 viewer. We had to copy the P2 folders to
the PC drive and then we could view. We will copy all the
P2 contents to an external FAT32 drive for the clients next time.
We use the G-Raid for editing on the MAC.

Did you try creating a Virtual P2 Card on the drive (Tool -> Setting Virtual P2 Cards -> leftmost icon on toolbar)? Make sure you point it to the folder containing the LASTCLIP.TXT file and CONTENTS folder when you do that.

Yes, I hooked up an external USB drive with another P2 folder and
it worked fine. It was the MAC formatted drive that the P2 viewer
does not like. We loaded up the newest P2 viewer. Unless
Panasonic has updated a driver or something I cannot understand
why the P2 viewer could not read info from the MAC drive?
