T2i Using external Mic...confusion

This afternoon I'm doing some interviews for a friend and don't have too much time to test audio out.

What do I exactly need to just get a mic up and running for my T2i? There's a lot of information out there and I'm not sure what I need to use.

It's this afternoon so can't really order anything and don't wanna spend money yet. So a quick stop at radioshack/best buy is all I'm looking to do. Don't wanna spend more than $40.

I do have access to mics (both condenser and dynamic). I'm assuming I should just go with dynamic since I can't power them.

So am I going from Mic >XLR Cable >XLR to 1/8" mono adapter > T2i

I kinda think you're heading for disaster here. This cam has AGC and that's just not good let alone using a dynamic mic that's not very sensitive and probably noisey on top of that and from Radio Shack! really if you have a gun to your head, I wouldn't spend a dime on a half ass solution. At least the on board mic is paired with the on board mic pre for optimum sh#&ty performance. I watched a behind the scenes video where they used a 5DII with the onboard mic with the AGC on, and it wasn't bad.

Don't spend any money on the audio until your willing to do it right with a Juicedlink. Kind of pricey but such is life when you go with a DSLR. My .02 anyway. Getting audio right on the T2i will cost about as much as the T2i. The cheapest option is the Rode Video mic ($150) but that's an on camera mic, and really for interviews it should be boomed or laved.

Just use the onboard mic and do some quick test to see if it's tolerable.

Do yourself a favor and record the interview with one of the good mics you have on an external recorder and sync later. If you record in-camera the AGC will give you hell with no end.

If I record straight to my computer through a preamp do I have to change any settings to match the 24p rate?

I don't think this matters, but I had sync issues once using a different audio device.

I ended up trying to go from a dynamic mic to my camera through both:
- a XLR to 1/4 > 1/4 to 1/8 adapter
-a XLR > XLR to 1/4 DI box > 1/4 cable > 1/4 to 1/8 adapter

Both of these set ups gave an incredible amount of noise, even more than just using the on-board camera. Is because of the AGC? I expected it to be bad quality through a mic, but not worse than the on-board mic.
