Using dvx100b to capture analog footage

I had a friend of mine who wanted to have some footage on dvd that was on a hi-8 cam. I ran the rca cables to the dvx & the firewire from the dvx to the computer and put the dvx in vcr mode. I turned on the hi-8 cam and played the footage but could not capture the footage, although I could see & hear it fine on the dvx lcd.

I heard that you can use the dvx as a passthrough but could not figure out how to do it. Since the footage on the hi-8 was only 23 minutes, I just recorded the footage to the dvx then captured that footage to the computer.

I've obviously either heard wrong or missed something along the way. If anyone could enlighten me as to exactly how to go about using the dvx as a passthrough, without having to record the footage to mini dv then capture, I would appreciate it as I'm sure this situation will arise again sometime down the road.

Thanks,

Steve

You have to set your capture preferences to "non-controllable device" (I'm assuming Final Cut, yes?).

But, what you ended up doing is a better method anyway. Now you have an archive of the footage on digital tape, with time code and everything. Any time I work with analog footage, I first make a copy to DVCAM so that I have loggable time code.

Thanks C2V,

Actually PP2. I tried to adjust the capture preferences to none but no luck in that area. Could'nt seem to get it to show up in premiere. The camera was recognized but for some reason it would'nt let me use the dvx as a pass thru device.
