Using A1 for Stills

Wondering if anyone here has used their A1 for still shots.

I have a shoot coming up in January, and have to be super quick with the camera. Using the still photo feature along with video would be a life saver for me. Today I did some comparisons between my 6mp still camera and the A1, and the results were OK, but there was some grain on zoomed in shots.

I'll be making and selling DVD's. Should I forget using the A1 for stills?

Thanks in advance.

NO, my advice is use a still camera as a still camera, and a video camera as a video camera (Unless you have the Mark II,mmmmm) The picture mode on the camera is more for reference, when you take a picture it saves a corresponding text file with it telling u your settings at the time so you can go back and shoot the real deal after showing your producer or whoever.

There was also an article in HDVideoPro a while back about photojournalist using that camera for thier newspaper still shots.

I completely understand why macaholic said not to use it for stills. That's what has been said for a long time about video vs still cameras, since they specialize in their use.

But I read the "case study" on the Canon site, and it's encouraging. I think I'll look into this more.
My opinion is if pro photojournalists are using the A1 for stills, then it should work fine. Besides, I'm not a pro.

If anyone else has info, feel free to reply.

Thanks for the replies.

I've used the a1 for stills before, obvious not nearly as strong as a dedicated still cam but it does the trick for quick shots. It doesn't really look worse than a frame of video.

I've been in touch with a couple of Pro newspaper photographers/ videographers who have used their A1 for stills. One thing that I learned was to capture a photo from tape after a video shoot, by setting the camera to VCR/ play and scroll through the footage using the remote control. You can go frame by frame in slow mo (by remote) forward and reverse until you find the image you want to capture. Then press "photo" on the remote, which captures the image to the SD card.

This method was news to me, so I thought I'd share with you all.
