Using a small cam as deck...

This really is a universal problem for many people who do not want to spend more than a thousand dollars on a Minidv recorder/player like the famous DSR-11. But since i happen to have a HD and a XL2 Canon cameras, i wonder, can anyone recomend getting a third camcorder just to use it as deck? Which one?

I'm sorry guys, i'm just so poor!

If I jam an XL-2 produced mini DV tape into one of these cheapie DV cams to play back to my editing system, will I lose anything in quality? In other words, is this a good idea? Again, I would think this would be OK since, unlike an analog signal, a digital output signal would tansfer as it is on the tape without interference or loss in quality from the playback camera.

If you are soley talking about transfering data from an xl-2 cam, yeah, any run of the mill 200 dollar handy cam will do, and you won't lose quality with like you said, it is all digital.

If however you are talking about also using the xh-a1, it makes the options rather slim. You pretty much can use the hv10 or hv20 to capture the A1's 24f. It a bit hefty of price, around a grand I think, but a lot of people praise the hv20 for it's b-cam ablity.

And i'd hate to be 'that guy' but you probably should have searched for this info first. A lot of posts deal with this.

The hv10 and hv20 are the only decks for the 24f. Quality won't be lost if you shoot DV and upload in DV. DV is DV. An hv10 or 20 will run you from 800-1000.

Beat me to it. :(

I'll share some of your "that guy" duties and say that the search function is in the top right.
