Using a full DVD?

So we have an edited film short film shot with the HVX - it runs about 9 minutes and is roughly 50GB uncompressed. When you convert it to mpeg2 for DVD distribution it is a tiny file (a couple hundred MB) and only takes up a small part of the DVD. How do I use the entire DVD (4+GB) so the compression is as little as possible? btw - I am using a PC, not a Mac. Have Avid, Premiere, and Vegas - along with AE and the Adobe suite.

Thank you for any help you can offer.

The amount of compression is a function of the MPEG2 standard. If you are already encoding at the optimum bit rate (~8000), then that's all you can get. DVD players can't play uncompressed files.

Thanks Dick - but I'm wondering if there is some sort of compression software you can use with MPEG2 to make it less compressed? Or if I run at optimum bit rate, I'm stuck with that compression? I'm really looking to get the best possible look for when we project it onto a big screen.

It doesn't work that way.

You shouldn't really exceed a maximum bit rate of 7.4 for that length of video, and you should use Dolby2/ac3 audio.

Compression is a fact of life in authoring DVDs.

With DVCProHD footage, our SD DVDs look fabulous on an upconverted HDMI hookup to a LCD or plasma.

We even created HD DVDs for use on our Toshiba HD A1
