Using a 35mm adapter

Today I was digging through some drawers and I found a 35mm adapter I made for my HV20, and I decided to try it out with my XHA1. Only problem is that my camera cannot focus close enough to use it. I tried placing the adapter at different distances and zooming, ect but I could not get the camera to have just the focusing screen in frame while also in focus on the screen.

For those of you with adapters, do you have any advice as to what might help me solve this problem?
 
You need an achromat. Do a search in the 35mm adapter section of this forum and you'll find plenty of info about it.
